I Can't Resist an Airplane Disaster Movie

When I was a kid, I'd watch Million Dollar Movie on WOR-TV Channel 9. Million Dollar Movie (in an era when $1,000,000 was a big deal) played the same movie for a week, each and every day. When there was a good movie, I'd watch it as often as I could.

Every 4th of July they showed Yankee Doodle Dandy with James Cagney. I'm sure if I saw it today, I'd remember much of the dialog.

One of the movies they played was "The High And The Mighty", starring John Wayne as an airline pilot with a crippled plane flying just past the 'point of no return' between Hawaii and San Fransisco. Flight attendants are stewardesses, passengers - geese, and the former knows the name of each of the latter.

"The High and The Mighty" was my first airplane disaster movie. I was hooked. It was obvious the plane wouldn't crash... and still it held my interest and it still holds my affection.

I love airplane disaster movies! This sets the stage for what I watched tonight on Encore Action, one of the many 2nd run movie channels included in our basic digital package.

Who could ever forget:

Final Descent Director: MIKE ROBE 1997 Synopsis: A jumbo jet's crew struggles to land safely after a severe midair collision. Cast: ROBERT URICH, ANNETTE O'TOOLE, JOHN DELANCIE, STEPHEN MILLER, KEN POGUE, KEVIN MCNULTY, JIM BYRNES, BLU MANKUMA, TOM MCBEATH, GWYNYTH WALSH, LORRAINE LANDRY, CARRIE CAIN SPARKS, AARON JOSEPH, LOUVA MELOCHE, CODY SERPA, OSCAR GONCALVES, FRED KEATING, ROMAN PODHARA, ADDISON RIDGE, SHAYN SOLBERG

This is by far one of the most trite movies ever made. Every possible cliché was used. I loved it.

It was originally made for TV, meaning there are very well defined commercial breaks. So, the film hits a point of intense drama - fade to black - fade to action, but you're a few seconds before where it faded out!

I always liked Robert Urich for the character he portrayed. No matter who or what he was on TV, he played the same kind of guy. I'm not sure whether he was a good or great actor, but I know his character was quite likable, and in the final analysis that might be more important.

The effects are cheesy, acting melodramatic and to add insult to injury, they saved money by filming it in Canada.

I'm certainly not alone in liking this awful movie. Reviews on the net are favorable, and some fan was so excited that he literally copied CBS entire website for this movie and posted in to Geocities. That's dedication.

For me, the magnetic genres of bad movie are:
Submarine movies
Airplane disaster movies
Any movie that ends with the hero and villain throwing away their weapons to fight man-to-man... except the villain has another weapon.

I remember the movie you are referring to.
It was in the early 1970's, it was an ABC movie of the week.
It was about the soccer players flying across the Andes mountains in South America.
In order to survive, they stripped the meat from fellow people, and freeze dried it on the wings, then ate it.
Out of like 15 people, only like 3 or 4 survived.

Do you remember a movie made for tv about a plane full of blind people and it crashes and the survivors have to find their way to civilization? I remember the end where they follow a train track and find a dog. They wait until the owners come for the dog and they're saved. Do you know this movie?
