They Fired Joey Reynolds

Whereas most radio stations and disk jockeys had jingles cut in Dallas by Pams or TM (or now by my friend Jon Wolfert at Jam) Joey had a jingle sung by the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons!

Word came last night WOR radio let Joey Reynolds go. I can’t help but feel bad because Joey is one of the reasons radio attracted me so much and why I made it my career for 11 years. Though I lived in Queens and had both WMCA and WABC at my beck and call I gravitated to WKBW in Buffalo, a station I could only hear after dark.

Joey was having a party in the studio and I was invited night-after-night. As good as Dan Ingram, Cousin Brucie and Gary Stevens were they were never as approachable as Joey seemed. I sent my self addressed stamped envelope off to Buffalo to get my purple membership card in the Royal Order of the Night People. I wanted in!

I remember hearing about Joey at other stations as his career bounced up-and-down after ‘KB. At one point he was selling jingles (or so I remember) made to be sung over the intro to records. There are some songs I can’t hear today without hearing some now defunct station’s call letters sung over the front!

A few years ago Joey went to WOR New York where he held down the free form all-night talk show. He’s still that party guy I remember with an infectious laugh that’s instantly recognizable.

Even in the best of times you don’t make money keeping a radio station on-the-air 24/7. Nowadays all-nights are a liability in an otherwise awful economic time for radio. Joey was replaced by a syndicated show–one host for scores of stations across the entire country.

Among the things I remember most about Joey is a jingle from his show. Whereas most radio stations and disk jockeys had jingles cut in Dallas by Pams or TM (or now by my friend Jon Wolfert at Jam) Joey had a jingle sung by the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons!

I’ll bet you I haven’t heard this in 40+ years–until now.

  1. Geoff – Could not find your email but wanted to let you know your RSS feed has changed. I’ve read your blog for years (my kids go to Hamden Hall) in my Google Reader. I noticed tonight I had not seen any new posts from you in days. I know you were updating your site, so I bet you changed your RSS feed. Sure enough I reentered your url into Google Reader and it found you again. Other people maybe having the same problem…just wanted you to be aware. Good choice with WordPress – surprised it took you so long 🙂

  2. No, really??? That’s horrible.

A couple years ago, the musician I tour manage somehow got invited to be on his show. They asled for a performance and assured us they’d be able to handle her electric keyboard. So we schlepped down to WOR at 2am (the only time one can find free parking on Wall Street!). Not only did they have no idea how to plug the keyboard in (Joey’s other musical guests either played acoustic guitar or sang to track), but they made us set up in his (not large) studio while he was interviewing somebody else!!

Eventually we figured out how to make the keyboard work, and then we waited. It had been clear since the minute we walked into the studio that Joey had no clue we were coming, and even less of an idea who my employer was. During the next commercial break his producer rushed in & a panicked Joey whispered loudly into his ear, “WHO THE HELL IS THAT, WHAT’S GOING ON?!?”

He got the 10-second overview, and then when the break was over he launched right into the interview. He went from confused, slightly-senile old man to seasoned radio pro in the span of 2 seconds. It was quite impressive.

With the Joey Reynolds Show goes an era. He will be missed.

  3. Was there anything better than radio in the late 50’s and 60’s? I will always remember the day my father came home from work and gave me a breadbox sized radio for my room. The light from the tubes leaking out from the back plus the dial in front made a wonderful nightlight as Shelly Fabres sang “Johnny Angel”.

  4. I still have breadbox-sized radios with ‘hollow state’ devices in them. They glow in the dark, and help keep the shack warm while you carefully adjust all the knobs to get a signal from half-way around the world.

My kids are amazed that tube-type radios actually do work…

And yes, there was NOTHING like listening to WOR, WABC or some other far-away AM station’s signal wobble in and out of the static crashes, noise and hetrodynes in the middle of the night on an old RCA radio direction finder tube receiver from the middle coast of Florida during the ’60’s.

The fancy all solid state DSP and menu-driven radio appliances we have now just don’t have the same soul, as it were…at least the electric bill is lower, and you don’t blow out a tube and die in the middle of transmitting or receiving anymore.

  5. brings back memories always listened to him on wkbw at night when the station came in, didnt know he was still on

  6. I’m broken hearted about Joey’s going away. Will he be on anywhere else?

Great show . . . I knew it was toooo good to be true and last. He’s the greatest.

  7. Please call WOR 212 642 4500 and let them know what a cesspool of a station they have — no exaggeration. They are such cowards they don’t have a direct email to Rick Buckley the miserable owner who made this stupid decision. You can email an underling, Scott Slakefied who is in the programming area slakefield@wor710.com.

WOR710 — It’s dawn to dusk vitriol and crap.

Joey is a class act and will be on MSNBC, but I will miss the radio show so much. He gave so much on his show and never was boring more than you can say for 99.9% of the population. What a nice reward for him. RIP WOR!

  8. GUESS what show is replacing Joey??? That idiotic Coast to Coast. I am so livid. I want to listen to a show like Joey’s with variety and not stupid segments on Big Foot, Vampires, Ghosts (they record the ghosts — zzzzzz), global catastrophes and everything idiotic. I am sooooo upset and angry. I’ve emailed stupid George Noory and let him know that I will never listen to his jackass show again.

  9. I AM SO HEARTBROKEN ABOUT JOEY REYNOLDS GOING OFF THE AIR THIS FRIDAY, I ALSO BELIEVE HE WILL BE BACK SOONER THAN THEN WE THINK BECAUSE WOR WILL SUFFER FOR MAKING THIS DECISION THEY SOON WILL REALIZE THAT A LOT OF LISTNERS ESPECIALLY MEWILL NOT LISTEN ANYMORE TO THERE STATION AND SO WILL A LOT OF PEOPLE JOEY’S SHOW WAS REAL ENTERTAINMENT NOT ALL THAT POLICITIAL GARBAGE ESPCIALLY THE JEWISH HOUR ON FRIDAY NIGHTS IT WAS HILARIOUS. ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME THAT JOEY WILL BE BACK AND WOR WILL REALIZE WHAT A BIG MISTAKE THEY MADE. YOU HOLD YOUR GROUND JOEY REMEBER WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES SOMEWHERE THE LORD OPENS A WINDOW.

  10. I just found out about Joey’s firing tonight. I can’t believe it!
What was WOR thinking when replacing Joey with the Space Cadet? It’s ridiculous? WOR stinks for this! John Gambling’s no better.

  11. WOR has lost me as a listener. Joey is smart, entertaining, and human….this is really a sad day for radio and listeners. WOR would rather have someone like Johnny 1-note Gambling who is so tedious I get drummed into slumber.Goodbye WOR.

  12. MEREDITH, you got treated to a bit of Joey shtick. On any given night he has “surprise” guests brought into the studio without his advanced knowledge, whether by Myra Chanin or accompanying another guest. He also doesn’t read books written by guest authors before the show (he gets a synopsis), preferring to let them explain themselves and carry the segment.

Well, present tense no longer applies and WOR Radio programming has made a huge mistake on so many levels by dropping Joey Reynolds. The syndicated nonsense replacing him won’t pan out and they’ll bring in the infomercials. Unfortunately, there are two obstacles to getting Joey back: Joey’s older adult base are least likely to run to their computers to find the phone number DENISE put up; second is that radio programmers typically are youngish and from “elsewhere”, trying to make their name in our city but without the deep instincts to know what we really want. One thing we don’t want is a canned show from “the deep desert” as an all-night driver with a grating regional accent recounts his experience with those mysterious lights in the sky. Is it always the same guy, different spin?
    What a damn shame.

  13. I think it can’t hurt to also email that turd George Noory (I am so ethical and pure as driven snow) the host on Coast to Coast. I have and he sees no problem in being the one to have Joey’s show end. You know what he said to me??? He said “If it weren’t me it would be some other show.” AAARGH. Hey, didn’t the Nazi’s kind of have this philosophy too. Obeying orders, if we didn’t do it, someone else would. And then George had the nerve to say he “admires” Joey. I let him know that I’d rather be despised and have that person not take my job vs. being “admired” and have THAT turd nail in the last nail.

George portrays himself as all wise, handling both sides of questions. He is very very very BIG on how we are becoming a corpocracy dominated by the huge corps – insurance, banks, etc. BUT what does Mr. Hypocrite turn around and do — let his HUGE Corporate Megoalith, Clear Channel, BUY his place on WOR. Shameful. WWRL further up the dial in NYC is dying to have programming, but NOOOOOO, St. George had to go along with this disgusting displacement of a truly great show.

Let coast to coast know how you will NOT be listening. Here is george’s email: george@coasttocoastam.com. Tell him what an underhanded, hypocritical thing this was. He seems to think that he had no say in this at all — pure B.S.

I also joined (very temporarily) the two facebook pages for Coast to Coast and joined only so I could rant about Mr. Holier than Thou who is really a money hungry, unprincipled jackass.

And have a lovely day y’all. Really really feel there is a hole in my late nite life.

    denise

  14. For one I am glad Mr. Reynolds is gone. I have tried listening to him at different times during the past few years…he is so arrogant. He does not know a thing about history! He makes fun of prestiges authors who have been on his show. Just because Mr. Reynolds has visited a certain country does not make him an expert about that country as he seems to think it makes him! He has the same old guest night after night! I did enjoy Kreskin, though. At least he had a brain!

  15. Joey Reynolds made insomnia a good thing. I miss him already and it doesnt surprise me in this world of conservative media bombardment that he was let go. I loved his take on reality. WOR is clueless …

  16. only Ronald Hoffman left on WOR. midnte to 1 am. I will listen to him on CKLW. So long old friend WOR To bad for us all. Just too bad

  17. People from our crazy and soulful city want one of our own with all the quirky trimmings. That is who we are. What you have done is to force corporate emptiness down our throats to add to all the other bs in this world.I suppose he was too human for you vapid, plastic zeros.WOR sucks.

  18. Rick Buckley has finally “succumbed” to the same mentality as those
“children” who hold many of today’s high positions and who are sans “logic” and “common sense.” What happened to those two qualities? There are plenty of “pinheads” in the world today, but Rick Buckley gets the grand prize for being the “EPITOME OF A PINHEAD.” By caving in to today’s economic hard times, Buckley, in his idiotic attempt to save a “BUCK”, will ultimately lose a gazillion bucks as a result of his clueless, and ignorant decision to rid Joey Reynolds and replace him with a ridiculous “space cadet!” It’s an absolute INSULT to his station’s loyal listeners! Buckley, along with his colleagues, made an “executive” decision. Just wondering what the average age of that group might be – seems like “10” to me.

Buckley had a rare diamond in his hands. But his stupidity allowed him to haphazardly throw that rare diamond into the sea. Joey Reynolds is unique. A far cry from any of the other radio talk show hosts and personalities – he offered a true “variety” show unlike any other – sort of like an Ed Sullivan show on radio instead of TV, along with a huge audience of late night listeners. WOR would not have gone down the drain by keeping Joey on the air – new stations across the country were being brought into the loop, and many more could have been brought in going forward. Taking on the “space cadet” will NOT save revenue for WOR – rather, it will create the reverse. Alienate a vast audience. Advertisers “need” and “thrive” on an audience. Without that audience, their ability to push their wares will go up to thin air.

WOR – radio’s oldest “gold seal” of stations has lost its most precious overnight captain – and, as I said above, will lose its loyal listeners as well. When the almighty “buck” becomes the bottom line, and “quality and integrity” take the second, or better yet, the last place; it means farewell to what intelligent and sensible people have come to know and enjoy – in any industry for that matter. Goodbye WOR! It’s truly a shame.

  19. Firing Joey Reynolds was a stupid idea for WOR to do……………….The program taking his time slot is dumb dumb dumb……………….I will no longer be a WOR listener…………..

  20. JOEY REYNOLDS BROUGHT BACK THE GOOD OLD DAYS WITH VARIETY, OLD TIME NEIGHBORHOOD FEELINGS WITH THE PEOOPLE WHO “WALKED ONTO THE SHOW”, I.E. CHA CHA, MYRA, FRANKIE VALLE, PAT COOPER, AND OTHER REALITY FIGURES, YES THE ORIGINAL REALITY SHOW. THE MEMORIES WERE NOSTALGIC, THE FEELINGS WERE REAL. IT WAS A TREAT TO STAY UP LATE AND LISTEN TO REALITY. THE DECISION TO REPLACE HIM WITH THE IDIOTIC WEIRD SHOW GOES TO SHOW YOU HOW WOR HAS SUNK TO THE LOWEST LEVEL OF INTELLIGENCE AND SAVVY OF WHAT THE REAL PEOPLE WANT, YES, THE PEOPLE NOT THE KIDS,OR THE “JOHNNY COME LATELY” PINHEADS…WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO…NO MORE CLASS, JUST LOW LIFE ENTERTAINMENT. GOODBY WOR
    FORMERLY YOURS,

  21. PLEASE BRING BACK JOEY REYNOLDS. HE HAS BEEN MY NIGHTTIME ENTERTAINMENT FOR YEARS. MY WIFE AND I LISTENED TO HIM ALL THE TIME. WHERE HAS OUR DEAR FRIEND GONE? WE WOULD WELCOME HIM BACK WITH OPEN ARMS. COME HOME, JOEY.

  22. Joey Reynolds is one of the best radio and TV persons in the business. I first enjoyed him in the very early 1960’s when he was with WKBW 1520 AM and TV, and later in Miami and Philadelphia. He rasied a lot of us with his quick talk and great life stores. His last 14 years with WOR was great. I rember his first two weeks with WOR. Joey needed a night off so he had Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys fill in for him. Some times it was like turning the clock back to his KB and WFIL days.
I will be waiting for him to surface again over the air waves.
    Bart

  23. Here’s a solution to the Joey situation. If WOR would get rid of that “yenta” Joan Hamburg, Joey could come back to the station in her 12:00 to 2:00 pm time slot! True, it’s only for two hours, but two hours are better than no hours. In addition, if anyone doesn’t have the ability to listen to Joey at that time of day, they could tape the program and listen to him in the usual “wee hours!” Rick Buckley: are you reading these blogs?!

  24. Yeah, would be great to see Cha Cha, the whole crew from the Jewish hour, and all the guys from the caboret/gay hour on TV.

  25. One of the funniest shows Joey had when his friend from Florida,Sid called in and was staying over his Moms house in Philadelphia for an event he had on a Sat.
Sid kept telling his mom to raise the heat because he was freezing.
You could hear Sids mom in the background tell him its warm enough.
This went on for about twenty minutes between Mother and son.
I thought this was one of the funniest Friday night segments.
I certainly hope to turn my radio on a find Joey there,
I found him to be a highly intelligent, gifted and funny person, possessing much charm and wit,
He has a special way about him and I know he will surface somewhere, and I will find him with his special cast of characters that he worked with.

  26. Joey Reynolds is legend, pure and simple! I have stopped listening to 1520am during the 1-6am slot here in Buffalo,NY because Phil Hendrie can’t hold a candle to J.R.
What was once pure entertainment is now mindless drivel. Pathetic! Rick Buckley should be taken out back and shot.

  27. I am shocked. Not after 14years on the air would I believe some moron would decide it was time for him to go. Joey Reynolds was a personality behind that mike, he included his listeners in his personal life-you felt as though you knew his daughters, his new grandchild and his radio family..I spend half the nite now searching up and down hoping to find Joey somewhere…Will someone please make note of his whereabouts if known… WHERE HAVE YOU GONE JOEY REYNOLDS.

  28. So upset, have listened to Joey since the beginning, love him, his guests, and his pals. Hated Saturday and Sunday nites without him, now everynight is long and boring. The replacement show is terrible. Met his beautiful daughter one summer in the Berkshires, now I will not know what his two daughters and grandchild are doing . WOR, bring back this wonderful informative, funny and down to earth guy. PLEASE.

  29. I,TOO,CANNOT BELIEVE HOW A DECISION LIKE THIS WAS MADE.I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO JOEY SINCE HIS KIDS WERE LITTLE AND MINE WERE,TOO. I DO MY ART WORK AT NIGHT AND NOW THERE’S NO ONE TO LISTEN TO. IT’S THE DUMBING DOWN OF WOR. WHATEVER THE PROBLEM IS, GROW UP AND WORK IT OUT. P L E A S E!

  30. Will miss the entertaining Joey, he had a wide variety of guests which made the program more appealing, he is an excellent interviewer. I didn’t always agree with his politics which I think is better left out of the discussion. Hope that he will look at teaching in a university especially helping them run their radio broadcasting.

  31. ….where’s Joey ??????…………..what idiots at WOR….we’ll be looking for ya Joey on the radio dial……….;-(

  32. I’m certain WOR had reason dropping Joey, financial consideration… Too bad as his program was mature, provocative and intelligent. I listened to show many nights and enjoyed the “the old time schtick”. Any word on his new venue?

  33. Am certain WOR had reason for dropping Joey Reynolds program; do hope for financial
considerations only. I listened to show nights/mornings many times and found program to be intelligent, mature and entertaining. Any word on his new venue? Michael

  34. I WAS SO SADDENED NOT FINDING JOEY ANY PLACE ON MY RADIO. I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME THAT I FOUND HIM. HE WAS FILLING IN FOR SOMEONE. THE PERSON HAD BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. THAT WAS ALMOST FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.
JOEY KEPT ME COMPANY STARTING AT 3AM BEFORE WORK AND ON MY WAY TO WORK. HE HELPED ME THROUGH MY SLEEPLESS NIGHTS WHEN MY HUSBAND AND PARENTS ALL WERE ILL AND THEN DIED.I EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT TRYING TO INTRODUCE HIM TO MY WIDOWED YOUNG SISTER. SHE LIVED IN NY AND I FELT LIKE I KNEW HIM.
I MISS HIM. I HAVE SEARCHED ALL OVER THE RADIO AND JUST DECIDED TO CHECK THIS CITE. WHAT A HEART BREAK!
    DOLORES

  35. My wife and I listened to Joey every night and then… what happened? WOR pulled him for a stupid “Coast to Coast” show (guess they picked THAT up since it was dropped by WABC). We really enjoyed Joey and miss him a lot. Does anyone know where he went? Maybe WABC will pick him up! If not for Lou Dobbs, Steve Malzburgh, Drs. Hoffman and Ecstein, and Joe Bartlett and Dave Spencer (the ONLY NY news reporter who gives us also the Philadelphia teams’ news), WOR would be off from our radio permanently. We HOPE that those responsible in program direction would bring Joey back and get rid of that old windbag Joan Hamburg and the arrogant and ignorant John Gambling with his interviews of Michael Bloomberg (equally as arrogant and ignorant) and Michael Savage, the host of “Weiner Nation”.

  36. Joey’s show was one of the few I enjoyed listening to every night. We just loved him! Why did WOR drop him? The stupid show put in his place is hardly a fit substitute. I hope that Joey comes back to WOR soon or, can someone please tell me where he can now be heard?

  37. IT’S A SHAME SUCH AN ENTERTAINING TALK SHOW HAS BEEN REPLACED BY SOME NONSENSICAL CHATTER. JOEY REYNOLDS’ SHOW WAS ENTERTAINING AND HE MADE SENSE WHEN HE SPOKE OF THE PROBLEMS IN THIS COUNTRY AND WORLD. WOR LOST THIS RADIO LISTENER. HOPE YOU SURFACE AGAIN, JOEY.

  38. I had been (emphasis on had) an “all night” listener of WOR from the days of Long John Nevel, Jean Shepherd, Barry Farber, Larry King, Joey Reynolds, and others, with some breaks when my work schedule prevented late night listening. Now with the switch to pea brained radio for the all night part of WOR, I’ve moved up a bit to another NY station, whose host and programming is a bit more palatable.

I loved the scope of Joey Reynolds’ program, his guests, his personality, etc. I see that his TV program has been delayed again, now, I believe until September 2010, if nothing else happens to change it. I am a night owl, especially since I’ve retired, and have been a WOR listener for almost all my life. Unfortunately, the same lack of sagacity that dropped Joey Reynolds also seems to have initiated a shift to right wing politics that has me finding other stations to tune in instead of my old reliable WOR.

    Joey, I miss you.

  39. Joey is a person who chose to evolve, it was both entertaining and enlightening to listen.. I used to Love listening fishing the wee hours on Monmouth county nj jetty’s Good luck Joey and thanks for the memories…

  40. Joey Reynolds…WOW, I used to listen to him in the wee hours after I got home from work and there was nothing on TV but static (Pre cable)and nothing on the radio besides Joey and stations on auto pilot. I loved Joey and the Jewish hour. The parties he’d have and the food he would describe. Brought me back to my Grandma’s house and the smell of baked chicken, liver w/onions and Matzo.

  41. ROBERTA; I couldn’t agree more getting rid of Joan Hamburg…Oey is she annoying. They could ditch the Food Talk too. Get Emril or someone with a personality and some life, make it exciting vs. the “cerebral theater going…I’ve listened to my own BS for too long crowd” like Gambling and Hamburg. WOR..You are losing us!! I miss Dr. Bernard Melzer. He used to give sage advice on investments and to/not to do’s as far as wills and such. There was a husband and wife team too that gave investment advice The Donlyn’s I think. I used to enjoy them all. I haven’t listened to the radio in ages now.

  42. I can only imagine that these comments are censored. Has anyone even LISTENED to Joey Reynolds in the last few years? I called it “Cavalcade of Nobodies.” Off-off-off Broadway “stars” talking about shows that only 13 people will ever see, followed by “comedians” who think the Catskills are still located somewhere in the world of the living, and are the only ones laughing at their jokes, followed by singers who are either A: Burt Bacharach wannabe’s who couldn’t even SPELL “Bacharach”, or B: the occasional songwriter with SOME talent, who gets asked about where he/she buys bagels. …And in between??: Joey telling us how much better he is than EVERYONE else on TV, RADIO, and Films, And how he deserves half the gate from each performance of “Jersey Boys”.
Enough was ENOUGH. I’m glad he’s gone, and I’m glad the entertaining foolishness of Coast to Coast has replaced the non-entertaining foolishness of an octogenarian with a child’s nickname.

  43. Following is a copy of the protest e-mail I sent to the schlub
second banana at WOR–an exercise in futility, but I had to do it.

I’ve been unable to get to this project before now, but in finally trying to track down what happened to Joey Reynolds, I found some very disappointing information on the web. I’m
e-mailing into the great beyond, to say how very sad and mad I am that you cold-hearted business types have shut down the iconic radio performer.

Joey gave comfort and good information in the deep of the night, and his familiar voice was mostly a pleasure to hear and relate to, even though WOR’s reception wasn’t always very clear in my mid-CT area. I listened anyway, because even the every few words received were worth the aggravation. How sad for Joey, and what a loss for us who aren’t interested in the whacky and weird, or the screaming and political voices in the middle of the night.

Like the executive in “Network”, I can only cry out into the vast and uncaring void, “I’m mad as hell. . .”, etc., and hope that Joey’s many old friends who shared time on his show will be well and prosper. Same for the new talent looking for a break, and same for Joey who had seemingly found a special niche. May he find another venue deserving of his special gifts. I can only wish he knows how much he’ll be missed.

A pox on all your houses, WOR. I won’t be listening any time soon! I know you couldn’t care less.

  44. Kevin M. – Your comments only serve to highlight what a shallow and IGNORAMOUS fool you are. The fact that you took time to write them proves it even further.

  45. Joey Reynolds has a quick and incisive wit and great love of life. I miss the real life action, musician interviews, the human slips: example – Joey once impulsively asked an very underage young girl / singer, “Know what the best position is for a Jewish female? -(pause) Facing Bloomingdales!!!” Roaring laughter with Chacha saying, “Joey watch it!!!”

  46. I remember Joey Reynolds from the 60’s at WKBW in Buffalo…a lot of fun to listen to…unfortunatley, disc jockeys are a dying breed….please let us know when and where he surfaces.

  47. I am still missing Joey. I listened to him every night. There is not other show that can him. His show so extremely entertaining and very informative. I will always keep looking for him …….somewhere.

  48. I live in Detroit and just found out Joey is gone. I thought it was bad reception. Joey is the best. I listened to him on KB in Buffalo. Great going. You will never be forgotten.

  49. Does Joey Reynolds have a show, at present, on any other radio/TV station? Please advise…if and when it may happen.
    Thanks very much!!
    Joyce Epstein

  50. I agree with Kevin M. as an insomniac,i am always searching for interesting late nite talk shows. i usually found reynolds show to be outdated & his attitude arrogant when someone disagreed with him. his ‘jokes’ embarressingly unfunny. however, coast to coast show is ridiculous. i’m listening to my ipod now!

  51. I discovered Joey on the net all the way from Australia and loved it.
Do people realise that there is a large archive of his shows on the WOR website? I just listened to his session with Curtis Sliwa which is classic. I hope he gets a platform soon, I miss him and the good hearts he discovered. I reckon if worse came to worse he could film his show and upload it to youtube. Its financially possibly viable as the top poster on youtube earns over $300,000 per year, since the revenue generated by the advertising that pops up is shared 50/50 with the uploader and webhost.

  52. As a kid in Philadelphia I remember Joey… He was my favorite DJ. I even sent in my one dollar for a 45rpm record of The Joey Reynolds Show Theme song. “Swing Joey Swing, Burn baby”.. I wish I still had it. Recently, I started playing drums again, and it would be nice to have a mp2 (or simular) of the record again. Does anyone have a copy they can email me?… Or perhaps Joey will read this and offer to send me a copy again.

I put the record in my Seeburg select-o-matic juke box, along with my other favorite records to play along with. As time went by, the record got lost along with others I played along with. I have most of them except for Joey’s record.

Anyone have a copy?. Anyone have the record? Anyone want to email or snail mail me the recording. Be nice to complete my drumming collection to play along with, even though I am now 55. It’s fun and good excersize, even though my doctor won’t give me a prrscription to play the drums. Shame, that would take care of the Police showing up at my door step once in a while.

  53. Missing Joey. Cannot listen to that idiotic “Coast to Coast” on WOR. Surely, some radio station in the New York metro area recognizes what a great talent Joey is. We need him back!

  54. I grew up in Buffalo. I was at that critical pre-teen, early teen stage when Joey ruled the airwaves at WKBW. I didn’t have to listen at a distance, he was booming right in on my transistor radio, night after night. I loved it that he would eat on the air, wander away from the mic looking for something and talk directly to his engineer. The hand-off at 7pm from Danny Nevereath to Joey was always appointment listening. KB 1520 ruled in our lives back then and a young Joey Reynolds was the King. Long live the Royal Order of the Night People. Good luck Joey!

  55. sadly, it wasn’t really Joey R who got the ‘boot’. it was US! we aren’t generating enuf cash for the station. as we dont ‘scribe to the pudding headed, lesser than available mental capacity of the ‘younger’ segmnent of our esteemed population base. it wasnt Joey, the station looked at the cencus stats and tossed US into the trash! ask any marketing slob in NYC what drives their decisions, its these young nerds with MBA’s and daddy’s soon to be inherited stock portfolio in their back pocket!

  56. Joey Reynolds was an egotistical hack whose simple minded philosophical & political views, not to mention his lack of musical knowledge WILL NOT BE MISSED.

  57. Where is Joey?
Coast to Coast as somebody said: Toast to Toast.
    SHAME ON WOR!
What happened to the Station of Barry Gray and gene
    SHEPPARD?

  58. I’m a little too young to remember Joey Reynolds on WKBW, but we lived in the Rochester area in the 70’s and I definitely remember WKBW. Sadly, THAT isn’t around any more either, having morphed into WWKB. Not the same ring.

Thinking about WKBW made me remember another station from western NY that I haven’t thought about in years – WUWU (Woo-Woo Radio). Early to mid 80’s? They were certainly playing stuff I didn’t hear anywhere else.

Funny how memories chain together and you end up someplace completely unexpected…

  59. Geoff, try to go to Channel 61. They are on the upswing while that zoo you are on now is going down. I have watched Channel 8 for years but the main reason was your weather and the entertaining way you delivered a basically dry product. you made a dull subject interesting.

I live in the same town as Ann (Madison) and while I casually know her I will now be going to 61 as a substitute for good old channel 8. Maybe 8 can go to Judge Judy reruns since I do believe that their evening viewership is going to tank.

good luck in whatever you do.

  60. Joey is so very much missed I cant believe I still go through the radio stations and hope against hope I catch him on some station as a guest and he will tell us where we can hear him again, really what a loss he is missed . Nail that shoe to the door and get back to us , nothing has come close to being so enjoyable .

  61. I agree with almost all the postings…I first listened to Joey as a college fresh(person) in 1962…on KBW…in upstate NY. About 15 years ago…my husband & I, being late night radio talk show listeners,.. woke up to a familiar voice…one we hadn’t head since 1966…We were both amazed…and listened each evening. We did love his schtick…the “old time’ guests he had on,the talented..and not so talented musicians and singers…I also agree with some of the comments about his arrogance, his incessant rant about Jersey Boys, Imus, TV talk show hosts…and his inaccuracies on a variety of subjects…BUT, he wasn’t a right ( or left) wing…screaming…crazy idealogue. We were sad when he left…BUT we immediately found another all night show…on ABC in NY…that is also not a crazy..screaming idiot…
Does anyone know what Joey is up to these days? We thought he was going to do be doing a simulcast radio/tv show.

  62. Though he’s no longer on radio (for now) I am watching him on cable now. It’s the whole gang broadcasting live from the street level of the NASDAQ building in Times Square NYC. You can see people walking by like those morning shows. The show is called All Night with Joey Reynolds. The cable channel is called NBCNY on Cablevision

It seems like he’s on Mon-Fri from 12 midnight till 2:00 am.

I’m not sure if I like this new trend of watching radio broadcasts but it’s sure great to see him. I wonder what radio station he’s simulcast on.

  63. JOEY IS INDEED BACK!! HE’S ON WNBC (WHICH IS CHANNEL 109 ON CABLEVISION IN BROOKLYN.) HE DID HIS USUAL FRIDAY NIGHT (JEWISH HOUR)AND I WAS SAD TO HEAR THAT MICKY FREEMAN HAS PASSED AWAY. HE WAS 94! JOEY SAID THE FRIAR’S CLUB PLACED HIS NAME ON A PLAQUE ABOVE ONE OF ITS ROOMS – THE MEN’S ROOM! WILL DEFINITELY MISS MICKY FREEMAN – EVEN AT HIS RIPE OLD AGE HE WAS CLEVER AND QUICK WITH THE JOKES.

I’M SO HAPPY THAT JOEY IS FINALLY BACK AND IT’S A PLEASURE TO ACTUALLY GET “TO SEE” HIS GUESTS. IT’S A BIT AWKWARD FOR ALL OF THEM AS THEY’RE NOT USED TO BEING BEFORE A CAMERA, ALTHOUGH MYRA CHANIN, THE PRODUCER, HAD NO PROBLEM TALKING IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. HOPE JOEY GETS MORE ADVERTISERS SO THAT HE CAN STAY ON THE AIR. SO FAR HE’S GOT “DR. BROWN’S” SODA AS ONE BACKER – I ALWAYS LIKED DR. BROWN’S “CREAM” SODA ALONG WITH A NICE HOT PASTRAMI SANDWICH!

DON’T THINK THE SHOW IS AS YET SIMULCAST ON RADIO – IT’S STILL YET TO COME. IF I’M UNABLE TO WATCH THE SHOW ON TV – TAPING IT IS GOING TO BE MY OPTION. HOPE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE HEAR THAT JOEY IS DEFINITELY BACK!

  64. Joey used to sing “Rats in my Room’…from what I hear THE GOOD
RATS ….will be on his show this Friday March 18th!!!! only problem is how can we see or hear him!!!…by the way my son Hugo is the drummer for the GOOD RATS!!!!

  65. radiotime.com has him listed on 18 stations, Only one it seems is broadcasting him from 1am -5am 1240am Watertown N.Y., the whole show, but this night March 18 they had another joker on the radio, but go to radiotime.com and search Joey Reynolds and it appears he is broadcasting, we just need a good internet connection to just one radio station to continue to listen to him, maybe the guy on tonight was just filling in for him?

  66. I agree with you – Joey was the greatest! I grew up in Buffalo back in the heyday of Joey, Stan Roberts, Danny Neavereth, et al. KB was the greatest! I got to talk to Joey a few years back when I caught him syndicated on a radio station in the St.Pete-Clearwater area of Florida. We spent about 10 minutes – on the air – reminiscing about the “good old days” back @ KB and WOR.

  67. Ah, late-night AM BC band DXing with tube radios … glad that I am not alone in the pursuit. With all of the syndication, it’s not the same, but onward through the ionosphere we go.

  68. Its been well over a year know and many people I speak with, continue to miss Joey on WOR.I miss him as well. He always had talented and interesting guests, who often performed live on his show.In this way he helped publicize these thousands and thousands of performing artists over many years.I had the great fortune to be on his live late night program a few times and found him to be very open, inclusive and respectful to all his guests.Thank you again Joey.

  69. What has happened to Joey Reynolds? I was speaking with Lou Christie on 43rd Street last week with his
friend Gerry and he was not sure what happened. A friend told me Lou was on his show a lot in the past.

    Thank you

  70. I remember Joey Reynolds from WPOP in Hartford, CT and his Order of the Black Socks Society. He left POP for KBW and we were all heartbroken. He did a short stint only about a week back in CT on WDRC FM I think in the late 80’s early 90’s and for some reason was not well received. Too bad he was one of the greatest DJ’s. I remember his silly little jingles like the little kid that said, “I can take Joey Reynolds”.
