Bitterly Cold–A Matter Of Perspective

Winter doesn’t officially begin for another few weeks. However, to meteorologists, winter has arrived!

So far SoCal has escaped. That’s about to change.

The map (above – courtesy HamWeather.com) compares Wednesday’s highs to the average for December 4. Cold air has dropped down from Canada. Instead of turning east, it’s mainly slithered south.

cali-freezeAlready NWS has issued Hard Freeze Warnings for the agriculturally important San Joaquin Valley. The Los Angeles office anticipates some frost or freeze as close as the San Fernando Valley (aka “The Valley”)

The official forecast has Los Angeles seeing upper 30&#176s and lower 40&#176s overnight all the way to the weekend.

A tease on Channel 7 warned of the “Bitterly cold weather” on the way.”

Bitterly cold? I guess it’s a matter of perspective.

So far this winter we’ve had the heat on around 25 minutes. I expect we’ll be multiplying that this week.

Last week I saw Grace, one of our neighbors, walking her dog Bailey. Grace was wearing a thermal jacket and scarf. It was in the sixties. I can’t imagine how she’ll dress for this.

Addendum:

Right after I posted this entry Ryan Maue put the map (below – click to enlarge) from the 00z European model on Twitter. It’s calling for a freeze all the way to the LA County coast by Monday! For SoCal that is serious weather.

  1. While I sympathize with Grace and Bailey, (I would probably not easily acclimate to suddenly finding myself on Mt. Washington either), I worry about more about the all-important grapes from which my beloved wine comes. Time for the California vinyards to begin producing a 2013 vintage ice wine?

      1. Except Mt Washington is MUCH colder. Take it from me. My mom grew up in that neck of the woods.
One Sunday in January some years ago I called her and asked what the weather was like. She said” oh it’s not bad. It’s only ten below!”
Up there they don’t even start to slow down until there’s at least 4 inches of snow on the ground.

        1. As it stands right now, I feel as though I’m living on top of Mount Washington. Just came home from a cruise, where it was in the high 80’s.

          1. I took a trip to Florida in January some years ago. It was sunny down there but when I came home it had turned bitterly cold. I got off the airplane in my short sleeve shirt and light jacket. The only reason I didn’t feel cold was that I was running a temperature of 104.
But I can relate to your experience.

  2. Cover up your little lemon tree, so it doesn’t freeze. You will find that the temperature will drop down into the 30’s every few years for one or two nights. Since moving from CA to CT, I freeze here every winter.

  3. So I guess you moved to escape the cold but didn’t really escape the cold.
Or was it the snow and ice you were trying to escape?
