This Storm Is A Big Deal

I’m watching a PowerPoint presentation from the NWS San Diego office on the upcoming storm. One of their meteorologists, Brandt Maxwell, has just gone through an impact table and is beginning rainfall projections.

“You don’t see rainfall maps like this too often in Southern California.”

This storm is a big deal.

Those who report the news have dialed it up. It’s the biggest storm in years.

SoCal is a fragile flower as far as weather is concerned. We can’t take a lot. We’re not equipped.

We have roads that flood, hills that slide and boulders that tumble. Drainage, especially in older areas, is iffy. A house sized piece of mountain relocating itself to the middle of a highway isn’t uncommon here.

Traffic will slow to a crawl. Actually, it’s already done that. Traffic will just stop.

We live in amazing times. Everything needed to monitor and forecast the weather is at my desktop. I will do both for the next few days.

  1. I remember one time years ago, the water was pushing the manhole cover up and they had to close down my street. There are a lot of places in the LA area, where there are no drains. Over the years they have added because homes were being flooded. You don’t get a lot of rain there at one time, but it does occur. I was looking at the map you posted here. This one looks like a big storm heading in your direction. The surfers will be out too, because most likely the waves will be high.

    1. I saw that once when I was a kid too. Think it was a combination of heavy rain and a water main break all at once. It was an amazing sight to see water bubbling up a foot or more above the surface with the manhole cover floating on top.

  2. Geoff enjoy the rain I know you guys up there need it.

Down in South Florida our dry season this year has not been so bad, a few rain showers have made their way through. Still, it’s been sunny and in the 80’s, so I’m not complaining – lol.

  3. I remember a rain storm here in Waterbury….so much rain it push the manhole covers up also. Tried getting home one way and it was a mess. People’s yards were caving in and sliding down to the street. Flooding all over. Guess it will happen anywhere. Look what happened in Colorado last year. My cousin lives in the area that flooded!! Good luck with the rain Geoff hope you don’t see too much damage.
