It’s All About Perspective

irvine-skyAs I type, it’s 53&#176 at Bradley Airport back in Connecticut. It’s 60&#176 at John Wayne Airport here in the OC. That’s about as close as Connecticut’s come since last fall!

People in Connecticut are probably outside commenting on how it’s warming up. I just complained to Helaine how chilly it is!

It’s all a matter of perspective.

People say your blood thins. No, that’s not what happens. Spend a winter here, you’re spoiled.

I actually feel cheated we are cloudy and chilly today. That didn’t take long.

  1. Geoff, every so often you will feel temperatures below freezing there. It doesn’t happen very often, but you’ll feel like you are back in CT again. I have lived in the northeast for sightly over 20 yrs and I freeze every winter. I don’t even like leaving the house. My blood is still thin and apparently that will never change. When I was on a cruise last month, the temperatures in the Caribbean felt great. It was in the 70’s & 80’s. Only a few more years and I’ll be back on the west coast again, living there permanently. “I CAN’T WAIT”! How do you parents like living in Wisconsin, after residing in Florida for a long time?

  2. Having spent the last winters in Florida, I agree that one’s blood does thin when wintering in a warm climate. I was in Ft. Lauderdale last winter for most of December and January where it was in the 70’s and 80’s on most days– when I got back to the Tri-State area even a 50 F day felt like 20 F!

Also in fairness (and I know with your weather knowledge you might already realize this) – but keep in mind most of the West Coast had a MUCH warmer than normal winter (monthly mean temps were 3 to 5 F above normal at NWS John Wayne Airport this past winter)…so you might be getting a bit of a false perspective.

Also, having spent a lot of time in the warmer parts of the USA in winter (FL, SOCAL, AZ, SC…etc) – keep in mind that when you compare subtropical climates like Florida (and to a lesser degree California) with the rest of the USA – the differences are much greater in the low sun period (winter) than in the high sun period (summer). Irvine has a mean temp of 56 F in January and Bridgeport 30 F (a 26 F difference)….by April Irvine has a mean temp of 61 F and Bridgeport 50 F (the difference shrinks to about 10 F)….and by deep summer I think many stations in the NY/NJ/CT area are actually warmer than most SOCAL areas outside the deserts.
