Keeping Up With Harold

“At ninety,” I said, “no one expects you to be getting stronger and healthier, but you are.” He certainly has more stamina than he had five years ago. And, seeing results, he is motivated to work harder.

We took my dad to Laguna Beach today. It wasn’t really a beach day, but that’s OK. We got out of the house and my dad walked some more.

If money was no object — it is — I would enjoy living in Laguna Beach. It’s spectacular with homes propped on stilts and built into the side of steep hills overlooking the Pacific. Helaine and I would need some arrangement because I’d like a house she’d be scared to enter! Unless we win the lottery, don’t worry. These begin in the multiple millions of dollars.

This evening my father and I talked about his current physical state.

He’s been put under five times since December. Most people would see that as someone critically ill. In realty, it’s the opposite. The surgeries had a goal. It was reached.

“At ninety,” I said, “no one expects you to be getting stronger and healthier, but you are.” He certainly has more stamina than he had five years ago. And, seeing results, he is motivated to work harder.

He is also feeding on the attention he gets on the Internet. He enjoys it. Who wouldn’t? Like an infant or kitten, everything he does is adorable. He was made for the Internet.

I heard my father tell someone we’re treating him like royalty. OK… and?

Tomorrow we might sit by the pool.
