I Can’t Resist an Airplane Disaster Movie

When I was a kid, I’d watch Million Dollar Movie on WOR-TV Channel 9. Million Dollar Movie (in an era when $1,000,000 was a big deal) played the same movie for a week, each and every day. When there was a good movie, I’d watch it as often as I could.

Every 4th of July they showed Yankee Doodle Dandy with James Cagney. I’m sure if I saw it today, I’d remember much of the dialog.

One of the movies they played was “The High And The Mighty”, starring John Wayne as an airline pilot with a crippled plane flying just past the ‘point of no return’ between Hawaii and San Fransisco. Flight attendants are stewardesses, passengers – geese, and the former knows the name of each of the latter.

“The High and The Mighty” was my first airplane disaster movie. I was hooked. It was obvious the plane wouldn’t crash… and still it held my interest and it still holds my affection.

I love airplane disaster movies! This sets the stage for what I watched tonight on Encore Action, one of the many 2nd run movie channels included in our basic digital package.

Who could ever forget:

  1. Could anyone help me i was aske dthe title of a film about a plane that crash some where cold and to stay alive the survivors had to eat the dead. I have no clue what is called, does anyone know cause it is really bugging me now.

  2. I remember the movie you are referring to.

It was in the early 1970’s, it was an ABC movie of the week.

It was about the soccer players flying across the Andes mountains in South America.

In order to survive, they stripped the meat from fellow people, and freeze dried it on the wings, then ate it.

Out of like 15 people, only like 3 or 4 survived.

  3. Do you remember a movie made for tv about a plane full of blind people and it crashes and the survivors have to find their way to civilization? I remember the end where they follow a train track and find a dog. They wait until the owners come for the dog and they’re saved. Do you know this movie?

  4. Hi, I am looking to find out the name of a black and white movie. As far as I remember, It started out at this scientist house. They found out something that will change the world. They all got on a plane, then something happened and they were going faster then the speed of light. Then they were taken by a race of aliens. The aliens said, they were going to destroy their world if they did not change their ways. That is all I remember about this film. It was not Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits. It was a full length movie. I would say more like 1950-1960s. Can you help me with this. I did not know the name so I could not find it on TMC.

  5. Does anyone know the name of the airline movie based on Austin Ferguson’s novel,
RANDOM TRACK TO PEKING? The movie has a different title. Thank you.
