No Fireworks For Me

I wanted to go to the Hamden fireworks last night. The weather was perfect. I had the night off. I couldn’t find my tripod. For shooting fireworks pictures a tripod is a must.

I started to look around. When it didn’t turn up in the first perusal, I called for an expert consultant – Helaine. We went downstairs and then upstairs. When she got to the attic she called me. There was something wrong.

The aluminum pan under the air conditioner’s air handler was nearly full of water. The plywood attic floor was wet (though, as we’d later see, not wet enough to leak into the ceiling below). This was not good.

I’m actually not sure how this thing is supposed to drain, but my first though was to get the shop vac. It’s wet/dry, but since it had last been used for dry work, it was full of dust and dirt.

I cleaned it as best I could and used it to suck out all the water. By the time I was through, the vac was at least half full! The air conditioner problem was temporarily solved, but I had a very heavy vacuum cleaner full of water to move downstairs.

Next step was to open the attic windows and get a fan to blow on the plywood to help dry it out.

This goes into the ‘it’s always something’ file.

Tuesday, when the world returns to work, I’ll call our heating/air conditioning contractor and see if they can figure this out.

In the meantime, I still have no idea where the tripod is.

  1. could be something as simple as the drain hose is clogged. you might want to check that before you spend a inevitable fortune for professional service.

  2. Geoff, we had a similar problem last month, unfortunately ours was not discovered until the ceiling began to leak and we filled 3 taping compound buckets that leaked like a waterfall from the hole we punched in the ceiling to drain it. The pvc pipe that ran from the unit to drain had evidently shatttered over the winter. Good luck!
