AT&T’s Answer

Here’s AT&T’s reply to my email. I wouldn’t have expected any less… actually, there isn’t an answer that would have been less:

Dear Geoff Fox,

I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Based on the information provided in your request, we are unable to process the adjustment.

If this response does not address your concern, please reply directly to this email. To ensure a timely response, do not change the subject line of your reply.

Unreal.

  1. Port your number. I’ve had VOIP for three years and while it has its moments, it beats the aggrevation of dealing with the phone company. I’ve used Vonage, Sunrocket and now I’m with Viatalk. For the price you can’t beat it and no more AT&T.

  2. Geoff, I made the switch to VOIP about 6 months ago- i have charter cable, i think it is $24.95 (have digital cable and internet with them, so a decent price), i have never had a problem. Go for it!

  4. Hi Geoff,

I have had Vonage for a little over a year. As the other commments state they have their moments but with a good phone work as well as our pals at ATT, SBC, SNET, Southern New England Telephone or whatever they want to call themselves now. I was a customer of Southern New England Telephone for 30 years and my parents 27 years before me; back in the day of party lines and 4 digit home numbers. You get NOTHING for customer loyalty today. I feel like any one person is disposable to them because they will get 50 more customers to replace me in a moment. Big Corporate Mentality. Pay more for less.

    What ever happened to good

    CUSTOMER SERVICE????

It’s a good idea to give the alternative a try.

  5. I got rid of SNET/SBC/AT&T about 1 year ago and switched over the Vonage. It’s been rock solid, no problems what so ever. You can’t even tell the difference between VOIP and POTS (Plain old telephone service) Drop them now.

    Good luck!

    Mike

  6. Geoff,

I switched 4 years ago to another VOIP provider, Packet 8. I played the “keep both” testing game for about 3 months then I canceled SBC completely. When I moved to my new house, I never even had phone lines installed! – I just wired the VOIP box right into the phone wiring and now I have VOIP on every telephone jack in the house.

I give the traditional land line 10 years left to live. Even as it is now, almost everyone has a Cell phone. If cell phone service is decent – what’s even the point of the traditional “home telephone”?

Why should a house have a telephone anyway? Seems pointless if each person has their own telephone – you don’t call a house, you call a person.

Imagine if everyone realized this all at once and called AT&SBwhatevertheyare and canceled their service.
