Shaking With The Next Door Neighbors

I was in Maine a total of four days and yet I’ve picked up new next door neighbors – Kay and Skip, also at the foot of Lawler Lane.

Hi

We had our first earthquake that I can remember for a long time this morning. Some of you that live in Maine might have felt it.

Those of you who don’t it is a weird thing to go through. Skip thought it was thunder, but then when our building was shaking that was scary.

It registered a 3.5 which isn’t to bad, but enough to scare you. How lucky we are not to have such bad things in this area. So many people don’t realize how lucky we are.

Hope everybody is doing well. We are doing the best that we can right now.

Love ya all,

Kay and Skip

Here’s the official rundown from the USGS.

Meanwhile, a week and a half ago, I would have been there. I’m not sure whether that makes me happy or sad.

  1. I remember two earthquakes when I was a kid in Maine (Auburn, specifically). The first was only a 2.3, and I heard rather than felt it. I was outside and thought it was just one of the freight trains that regularly went by across the lake.

The second was a 3.4 a year or so later. I don’t remember feeling it, but my mom was taking a nap on the couch at the time and she ended up on the floor. 🙂

My senior year in high school I took Geology, and I will never forget the day our teacher pointed to a map of North American fault lines, traced the one that goes right through Maine and said that this particular fault is more than a century overdue for a massive break. When I think of that, I’m kinda glad I moved out of the state …

  2. I remember an earthquake in the mid 1980’s that I think (if I remember correctly) was centered in Westchester County, NY (I live in Bridgeport, CT). It was around 4am and the only reason I was awake at that hour was that I got up with my husband who was getting ready for work. I’m not sure, but I think it was around a 4 or 4.5, and I heard it more than I felt it. It did sound like thunder rumbling and I didn’t know what it was until later when it was reported on the news. I just can’t imagine how scary it must be to be in a stronger earthquake like they get in California.
