Who Works The Holidays?

I’m working today, but it’s my choice. I have seniority over everyone at work. Most of the folks I’m with are a bit lower on the seniority totem pole.

That got me to thinking. Who is staffing the ER or flying the airplane or acting as air traffic controller today?

Have we created a system where a few days a year, the people we depend on the most are those who have the least experience… and pull?

    You said it – you are a tool.

  2. I’m working today too — but that’s because my band is on tour in England this week, and we had a gig in London tonight.

    I never realized before today that turkey really isn’t an item on British menus in any form. You can’t even find it as a deli sandwich. So I settled for a lamb burger instead. :}

    Hope you and yours had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  3. At the TV stations I’ve worked for the folks with the most seniority still have to work at least one holiday but they have more of a choice about which ones to work. I would usually choose to work because I got overtime and holiday pay as well as a chance to anchor. When my son was born I didn’t want to work all the holidays but I was older and there were more younger folks who were happy to fill in.

    I’m not sure how air traffic control works but I know at our local hospital it’s usually a combination of the luck of the draw and who wants the overtime. My mom, an ER nurse, until she got sick, would work holidays for the extra cash because we needed it.

    Happy Holidays

  4. My husband has worked in a hospital for many years in different capacities and there are more senior people working on that holidays than you may think. Since most hospital workers (RNs, APRNs, Techs of all types) are paid hourly the holiday pay is a great incentive to work. My husband has worked almost all holidays for close to ten years.

    So see it is a lot like you. People choose to work the holiday in those places too…kinda like going to work in a snow storm. You have to go to work…it’s your gig. As do the people who work the hospitals etc.

    Hope you had a good holiday, work or no work 😉
