Don’t Get My Hopes Up

One of the reasons I hadn’t bought a satellite radio yet had to do with the conflict between Major League Baseball on XM and NFL on Sirius (and, of course, my friend Rick on Sirius).

With the proposal of a merger, that seemed to no longer be a concern. After all, as Mel Karmazin said in Congressional testimony prices would not be raised and that listeners would benefit enormously by getting the best programming from both companies.

Wow – win, win!

This morning, in a count-your-fingers moment, the deal didn’t look as sweet. Here’s what the NY Times had to say, quoting FCC Chairman Kevin Martin:

  1. Once you go satellite, regular radio is so hard to listen to. There are a lot more baseball games on XM than there are NFL games on Sirius…so for that reason I’d pick XM over Sirius if that is your main holdup…besides baseball is much more a “radio” sport. I’d go XM (and in fact, I did….3 years ago – it’s great!)

  2. I have to agree with Patty. I’m relatively new to satellite radio (Sirius) and only started because the car I recently bought came with it. I quickly became hooked. Spent more than five hours on the road yesterday and it was a dream bouncing around the stations from news talk to hits from the sixties without the five minute frenetic commercial breaks that seem standard these days with local radio. I’m no fan of monopolies or Mel Karmazin for that matter but I’d give this one a whirl.
