My Friend’s Boss

For the first time in a long time, I felt as if I was dealing with someone who really knew something about ‘winning.’ Something desperately missing in media today.

How do you feel about your job? Are you happy? Do you feel appreciated?

I got an email from a friend on Thursday, telling me about a meeting he had with one of the heads of his company.

My friend runs a relatively small piece¹ of a multi-billion dollar multinational corporation. The boss he saw was number two overall – multiple levels above him on an organizational chart.

I’m going to be really vague, because I don’t want to betray his confidence. Though, really, wouldn’t the boss probably be pleased by the effect his meeting had?

In all honesty, he has the “wow effect.” He was so enthused, interested, talked and listened as a professional, was tuned in to my market challenges, and naturally addressing, suggesting ideas and solutions. I must say, I can’t tell you how unexpectedly impressed I was.

“Call me whenever you need help.” he said,

“Send me your top line research. Let’s go over them and see how we can take the ‘leadership position’ quicker.’ ”

Wow! I sensed no bullshit. The questions, his interest, knowledge and wide view was refreshing.

You know what, even if there is a bit of you-know-what, I sensed a genuine interest that was different and invigorating, compared to a pit stop.

For the first time in a long time, I felt as if I was dealing with someone who really knew something about ‘winning.’ Something desperately missing in media today.

It’s nice to see there are very highly placed bosses like that. It’s educational to see what effect they can have.

¹ – Small versus the entire company. His ‘little’ piece is still a multimillion dollar operation, employing hundreds of people.
