Incompatible No More

Web pages had to be designed to break gracefully, allowing IE to render them correctly by writing them incorrectly.

Dave, on of my loyal blog readers sent me a note early Sunday.

Yesterday I d/l’ed and installed IE 8 beta 2. I am able to view every site I have tried, except your Blog. I usually use Mozilla, which I am now using to pen this entry.

Thought you might like to know (if you do not already).

Crap! I’m 100% sure this is my fault, though I have no clue what I did.

There is a single line of code which fixes the problem–and it has been added. It’s an inelegant way of making the site compatible; forcing Internet Explorer 8 to act like Internet Explorer 7. I don’t even know how to troubleshoot this. I wish I did.

All web browsers are not compatible. For the first seven versions Internet Explorer remained incompatible with web standards–though it had the vast majority of users! Web pages had to be designed to break gracefully, allowing IE to render them correctly by writing them incorrectly.

It’s always something. Don’t they know this is only a hobby.

  1. IE8 Beta2 is VERY problematic, and I really wouldn’t spend too much time worrying about it…and whatever you do, don’t install it, because YOU CANNOT go back to IE7 afterwards.

There’s tons of info on wired.com & cnet.com regarding this issue.

As a web developer, I can tell you that I’m not installing or even worrying about IE8 compatibility until Microsoft releases their final version, which will probably still be buggy.

I sure did not expect/intend to create a “problem” on your PC. As a MSFT Beta 2 release, I assumed that IE ver 8 is nearing the end of the beta trial test phase?? Thus, I flagged the rendering issue — that I had encountered with your blog site (now remedied, as you noted).

Alas, I am not an engineer whom can assist yourself in resolving the extant IE 8 issue noted. (Let me know if I can assist you in any microwave transmission issue — LOL!)

    Oops..

BTW: Per the above comment from Gary, I did try to remove IE 8 (which had shown limited improvement over IE7; in my most BRIEF trial).

From the Control Panel, one can remove IE 8. Then d/l and reinstall IE 7 — with minimal “issues”. (My links “line’ has been reordered)
