My Favorite Lens

It’s not sexy. It doesn’t do a lot except shoot sharply. I bought it guessing, but not knowing, what it would do. If I could only carry one lens this would be it.

There’s still more to be posted from our Vegas re-marriage, but last night as I was going through photos I came to a conclusion. Actually, it probably hit me earlier. This just cemented it. I have a favorite lens.

Is that a big deal? Yeah, I think it is because having a favorite lens means a number of things, not the least of which is I can see the differences between my lenses in a distinct and discernable way. I understand what each does and does differently from the others.

My favorite lens is a Sigma 30mm f/1.4. (I see what the website says. I didn’t pay anywhere near that much.)

It’s a prime lens. You can’t zoom with it. It’s not a telephoto or wide angle model. It is similar to what used to come on film cameras as a standard portrait lens. At f/1.4 it is very fast.

Fast–another strange photo term. The best way to explain is a shot taken just after sunset is brighter on my camera than in real life. This lens allows me to shoot in moderately dark places like a casino or mall with no flash. It is a low light gem!

Fast also means a very shallow depth of field. The distance between what’s in and out of focus is very short. That can blur the background which makes the subject of your shot really stand out.

This 30mm lens is a surprising choice for me. It’s not sexy. It doesn’t do a lot except shoot sharply. I bought it guessing, but not knowing, what it would do. If I could only carry one lens this would be it.

  1. I think you just helped me determine what I lens I want for Christmas. My only prime lens, a Canon 50mm f1.8 was lost to an accident (dropped) at Acadia this fall.

  2. Mike, the 50mm 1.8 you lost is my favorite lens, especially for 80 bucks…although I’m starting to like mt Tamron 70-200 2.8 more and more.
