I Just Paid $1.099 A Gallon

Today we were eligible for a 65&#162 per gallon discount. Since the SUV was very thirsty we really hit the jackpot. I can’t remember the last time I paid $1.099, but it’s at least 25 years. Wow!

Helaine and I attended a 90th birthday party today. More on that later. I have been driving her SUV all week and… well, I’m just not as organized in remembering to fill the tank. As we drove by Stop and Shop she said. “We’ll stop here on the way back.”

If you’re reading this from out-of-state, Stop and Shop is a grocery chain. It is owned by a Dutch firm with the vaguely dirty sounding name “Royal Ahold N.V.”

As I understand it, Helaine’s Stop and Shop card entitles us to a discount on gas depending on how hungry we’ve been during the past few weeks. Today we were eligible for a 65&#162 per gallon discount. Since the SUV was very thirsty we really hit the jackpot.

  1. Not only is that a great deal, but last I knew S&S allowed you to get up to 100 gallons at a shot. I bring my 2 five gallon jugs when I go.

  2. As appealing as driving around with ten gallons of gas sloshing around in the back of the 4Rrunner is, I’ll pass and limit my savings to what goes in the tank.

  3. We took advatange of the S&S prices too and paid 89 cents a gallon. We almost fell on the floor. It cost me $14.50 to fill up my SUV. Glorious feeling!

  4. I recall gas was about a buck a gallon as late as the fall of 2000, or, just before Halliburton (read: GW Bush & Cheney) took over at 1600 Penn. I was paying just over 70 cents a gallon for home heating oil then. I wondered if the crashing of gas prices from 4-plus to $1.69 in the fall of ’08 was just a GOP ploy to get votes for McCain and the geography professor. I also wonder why O didn’t fight to keep speculators from getting prices back up to almost 4 bucks by the end of ’09.
