I have spent a good part of the day working on developing a website. It’s still a day-or-two away from going live. More than once Helaine asked me to stop for a few minutes. She felt I was getting a little too frustrated with the work. She worries I’ll hurt myself!
Website work is very detail oriented. You really do have to dot your “i”s and cross your “t”s. Mistakes are seldom forgiven by websites and browsers.
What makes this work more difficult is I’m not much more than semi-literate in “web dev.” Often I work with a CSS reference book at my side.
The site itself is being built with WordPress. WP is well known blogging software, though this won’t be a blog in the classic sense. I found a newsy looking theme (the look of the site) and added some minor customizations to make it my own. I still have to compose and then format a page for user generated content submissions. The site will be heavily dependent on UGC–the magic fairy dust of Web 2.0.
I already have a web hosting account. Adding another website to it is free. The actual domain name cost $9. That’s my total investment so far–$9. The cost of entry to the Internet is cheap.
Once this site is done I have another to work on. It’s a totally different idea and it will use almost no UGC.
Wish me luck.
