Local news continues to change. At dinner tonight Ann asked if I’d heard Len Berman was let go at WNBC in New York?
Wow. He’s really good. Is talent that unimportant? Stations would love to believe (and who will stop them) that we on-air types are interchangeable. Commodity anchors are cheaper.
Now Gawker speculates (with a denial from WNBC) Chuck Scarborough is on his way out! I can’t imagine a station being more identified with a single talent than Channel 4 and Chuck.
I’ll call him Chuck though we’ve never met.
This business is changing rapidly. TV was once a business of glamour and high salaries. No more. Chuck Scarborough is rumored to earn $3m, Len Berman $1m. Those days are gone. This is not “bank error in your favor” time.
Geoff,
Up here there have been 10 lay offs in the last 48 hours. Sad/bad times indeed. Plenty of office space in the new building. 🙁
Bob
Gary Ley, chief meteorologist at WJAR in Providence, was laid off on Monday after 24 years at the station.
Gotta wonder Mr Fox-what happens when your overpriced contract is up-you’re done!
That may very well be true. Who can tell? Or, stations may find established talent is important just to maintain.
No disrespect sir but you could be replaced tomorrow and sure there may be a few phone calls to complain but life and that station would go on.
You have my permission to worry about other things.
I need to know-has Jake read any of the posts in recent weeks?? I agree there are no guarantees in life, and yes, the station will go on, but how many of us have left and watch another station as we are very unhappy with the replacement-SHALL WE SAY MANY, MANY OF US!!!
Suzie – I didn’t realize it at the time, but the person who wrote that is the person I later wrote about in this blog entry!
