The Coder In Me

I like the solitude of working alone in a quiet space. It’s very unlike any working environment I’ve ever had.

I was just playing around with a friend’s website. He wants a different look and described the changes in an email. A few lines of code and voila. The site isn’t finished yet but it’s got its look.

What I’m doing isn’t so amazing in the abstract. There are fine coders–better coders than me–all over the place. My satisfaction comes from being totally self-taught.

I did take a single computer course in 1968. All computer languages have certain similarities which are predictable. I learned that back then. They follow Boolean logic which limits how arguments are presented to the computer. That makes learning easier.

In a post-TV world this kind of skill might be worth pursuing.

I like the solitude of working alone in a quiet space. It’s very unlike any working environment I’ve ever had. For nearly 40 years I have been wearing earphones or an earpiece every working day!

I am not speedy, but I suspect I’m getting faster while problem solving seems to be getting easier too.

  1. The best coders, designers, developers, etc. in the business are all self-taught.

Web technology evolves so quickly, staying on top of current trends and developments and incorporating them into your skill sets requires that you absorb them quickly. Otherwise, you won’t remain competitive for very long.
