With A Sleeping Dog By My Side

She found her way to the newspaper in our mud room to tinkle but chose the carpet to poop. Better this way than the reverse!

sleeping sofa roxie.jpgFor the past few nights Stef tried to sleep while Roxie attempted to keep her awake. Score one for Roxie.

Tonight, as a courtesy, I took the pup off Stef’s hands. Stef is asleep upstairs. Roxie is cuddled next to me.

I am looking down and to my left. Roxie is on her side. Her legs are outstretched. Her rear paws are curving around her front paws ever so slightly.

She looks like a baby lying quietly in her doggie fetal position.

When we came downstairs it was obvious she wasn’t ready to sleep. She had trouble staying in one spot for more than a second.

She found her way to the newspaper in our mud room to tinkle but chose the carpet to poop. Better this way than the reverse!

When it was time to bed down she placed her snout on my arm. Was it for comfort or security… or both? Like a child she went from full out active to restful in seconds.

I have work I’d like to do upstairs and a few dishes to wash. I don’t want to move. I don’t want to disturb her.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

  1. The adjustment to life without mom and littermates always takes time. One favorite soft toy that never leaves the crate can become a good surrogate. Pups like kids require consistency – but you knew that.
