Quick Question–Why?

Does it do anything other than scrape the road surface and in the long run add to wear and tear and cost?

snowplow-hamden.jpgI snapped the photo on the left as I drove into work this afternoon. Whitney Avenue (Route 10) in Hamden was snow free. The plow blade was down and scraping the road.

The truck itself was probably needed. Ice clearing chemicals were being applied from the rear, but why drop the blade? Does it do anything other than scrape the road surface and in the long run add to wear and tear and cost?

I am really asking because I don’t know, but this sight struck me as wrong.

  1. Here in Kentucky things are quite the opposite. We picked up 6 inches and the plows were driving around with the blade up and snow on the road.

I am sure it makes sense to someone at the DOT, but the rest of the world remains in the dark.
