Sleeping Giant: You’re Almost There

When a hiker walking down the mountain says that to someone walking up they’re really saying, “You look close to death. A few minutes from here there’s a place to sit.”

About 80% of the way up Sleeping Giant a hiker looked at me and said, “You’re almost there.”

It was just three words, but the meaning is very different than a literal translation would imply. When a hiker walking down the mountain says that to someone walking up they’re really saying, “You look close to death. A few minutes from here there’s a place to sit.”

“Maybe two days in a row isn’t a good idea?” That was Helaine speaking. Her comment was academic. We had no option but to finish walking.

With rain and appointments scheduled over the next few days we’ll be mountainless. We had to walk today or wait until the end of the week. It’s too early to make excuses.
