Helaine’s Quick Trip West

Brisket, if packed while frozen, will easily make the Hartford – Denver – Los Angeles trip without melting! Originally Helaine was going to carry it on, but gravy isn’t TSA approved and the whole thing would have been confiscated and discarded before boarding the plane.

“Can you weigh the bag,” Helaine asked?

She was in the final stages of packing for a trip that began this morning. We have a little luggage scale that slips around the handle on a suitcase. I am the muscle in our family (heaven help us all). This is my job. Stand clear!

“45&#189. You’re good.”

Helaine was on her way to Los Angeles. It’s a long distance short duration trip to see Stef.

Helaine packed as if she was going to a desert island where they don’t have things like supermarkets.

“She brought ice tea mix,” Stef told me this afternoon.

There’s no disconnect. Helaine knows perfectly well California is well stocked with ice tea. It’s just what a mother does. Think of it as an involuntary response. Helaine’s mother probably brought similar things to our house when she visited.

We learned something today. Brisket, if packed while frozen, will easily make the Hartford-Denver-Los Angeles trip without melting! Originally Helaine was going to carry it on, but gravy isn’t TSA approved and the whole thing would have been confiscated and discarded before boarding the plane. Brisket is a well known tool of terrorists!

It’s a quick trip, just until Monday. When Helaine returns she’ll travel lighter. The ice tea mix isn’t coming back home.
