CES — We Should Be In Vegas!

CES comes at the same time as the Adult Entertainment Exposition, but it’s CES that provides my porn!

I just sent an email to my friend Mike.

“Why aren’t we in Vegas for CES?”

We should all be in Vegas right now! It’s the annual Consumer Electronics Show. This is the place where high tech manufacturers and marketers unveil much of their new technology. CES comes at the same time as the Adult Entertainment Exposition, but it’s CES that provides my porn!

The pre-show buzz says 3DTV and tablet computing will be the stars.

I’ve yet to be won over by 3D. It should be noted I felt the same way about HDTV. Surprise–I’ve changed my mind.

3D poses difficult challenges considering it’s been reported some viewers don’t enjoy the experience while others become disoriented! Here’s part of Samsung’s warning:

Viewing in 3D mode may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain, and decreased postural stability. It is recommended that users take frequent breaks to lessen the likelihood of these effects. If you have any of the above symptoms, immediately discontinue use of this device and do not resume until the symptoms have subsided

No oily discharge?

For me the big deal at CES is tablet computing. The iPad opened that category and has been very successful. It is simply an amazing product.

From CNBC 9/21/2010: Big news for Apple and Apple investors: The iPad is the highest-scoring product that a leading consumer satisfaction index has ever tracked.

To me iPad is a proof-of-concept, not a mature product.

I want a tablet computer that has a front facing camera (maybe a rear facing one too) and more open access to programs and the outside world. It would be nice if a tablet could allow some simple manipulation of my digital photos shot in RAW format. Cellular connectivity isn’t a must for me as it would be for someone who travels regularly. A tablet computer should also be able to substitute for a TV or a telephone.

Those pads are coming at CES and seemingly at lower cost than traditional computing platforms. There have been lots of numbers mentioned, but the consensus view is around 70 new tablets will be introduced this week. Most will run on Google’s Android operating system, probably the Honeycomb 3.0 version which is optimized for tablets.

For many companies a CES announcement is just a trial balloon. What they’ll show in Vegas are carefully crafted prototypes that may or may not make it into production. Others will show a product at CES that’s a go, but not offer it for sale for months.

I’m very excited by all this. I will look very carefully. I plan on being a buyer. Now dazzle me.

  1. After reading the above comment, I checked the Register. I am shocked and cannot believe this – I am way beyond angry. For goodness sake, what the heck is going on at WTNH? I was upset about Matt, but I am pi**sed about Geoff – we’ve basically had him in our living rooms, through thick and thin. Not to mention all the background work we know you did with all the computer setup at the station. They’re ungrateful. I urge ALL of Geoff’s fans to send emails to WTNH in protest and let them know how we feel! I am going to do so right NOW!

  2. I am stunned. Geoff, you were why we watched WTNH. I might check in with Dr. Mel at 12:17, but that will be it. Know that there are thousands of us out here — who do not know about your blog — who are with you and will follow you in the market. Anybody with half a brain would know your credibility in the market and how you could pull in viewers.

Let us know what we can do to help, Geoff. If I were you, I wouldn’t go back to TNH — why?

  3. Geoff, as this is the only outlet for sending you a personal message, please know that you represent a constant in my life, born in 1980, all of my time in and around television centered around “Action 8 News” and the weather with you and Mel. I wish you the best in your next adventure and as I’ve grown very accustomed to while watching the 11pm news, “Don’t go to sleep yet, there’s more Geoff Fox to come……”

  4. Geoff, what a bad decision WTNH has made. You’re reporting has been a constant in my life since I moved to New Haven in the early ’80s. I’m sure you will land on your feet – but I have to say I’m shocked at some of the recent staff decisions made at WTNH. You have the support of the community, I’m sure of it. If you decide to make a career change you should think about teaching – you’d make a great science teacher!

  5. I am so angry and saddened by the news of your departure. You can be sure I won’t watch WTNH beyond 2/28. Please keep your blog up and facebook as well so your many fans can keep up with you! You ARE channel 8…They will soon see the error of their ways… Evi

  6. Geoff,

I can not believe that you will be leaving wtnh. I moved to the Hartford area about ten years ago and have not watched chaannel 8th news much since then. I happened to catch the newscast tonight and was thinking about how long you have been there. I googled you and that is how I found out about this. I wish you happiness in whatever you choose to do.

  7. Good lord, what the heck is going on over there Geoff?
You have carved out a spot there at WTNH that is only yours.
We support you,we are completely mystified.

  8. I hear Toshiba and Samsung are coming out with tablets and that one of these guys will be giving apple a true run for their money. Can’t wait.. I would have loved to go to the CES this year. Maybe if something comes to NYC I will go….Vegas never did anything for me.
