Tonight’s Snow: Slippery When Beautiful

know, I’m not a snow lover. Gorgeous snow seems so out of character for me.

Let’s change the subject for a while.

It snowed today. Much of the heavier snow came this afternoon and evening. It was a wet snow–a strange way to describe something that’s 100% water! It fell with the wind nearly calm.

There were two significant results from that setup. First the roads were a mess!

The wet snow signified critical temperatures near the melting point. Warm tires against wet snow equals an icy slush between you and the road and zero traction. Some drivers found out they had four wheel drive and no wheel stop!

Second, it was gorgeous!

I know, I’m not a snow lover. Gorgeous snow seems so out of character for me.

Snow that would usually be pushed to the ground with the slightest puff of breeze stayed put. The wet flakes slowly drifted down and accumulated on unlikely spots like branches. Everything is coated.

Tomorrow when the Sun comes out the treebound snow will melt. Beauty is transitory.

  1. It went from nothing, to a dusting, to WOW in no time. Craziness. It was quite beautiful though. But I’m ready to not deal with this stuff anymore 😉

  2. It was my favorite kind of snow today. We got a lot more than expected. 10″ at least in North Haven and Hamden. Craaaaazy!

It all came down really fast. Maybe 1-2 inches per hour because I went out at 7:00 to shovel and by 9:00 there were at least 4 more inches.

  3. GEOFF,I REMEMBER WATCHING YOU IN BUFFALO. I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE YOU IN CT WHEN I MOVED HERE IN 1990 AND IVE BEEN WATCHING YOU EVER SINCE. SORT OF A FREINDLY FACE WHEN YOU THE NEW KID IN TOWN. SO I TOLD EVERYONE HEY I KNOW THIS GUY FROM BUFFALO, HE KNOWS SNOW!!! I AM REAALY TAKEN BACK BY YOUR DEPARTURE FROM CH.8 I AM SURE YOU ARE GOING TO BE FINE BUT WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I DO APPRICIATE YOUR BROADCAST AND WILL ALWAYS BE A FAN. DAVID MILAK

  4. It is what it is. I remember one time meeting Geoff in person, put my hand out for a shake, and he ignored me at the Shubert for the New Haven Advocate. That is what I call shocking and poor manners.
I’ve heard of the arrogance, and after that interaction, I have seen it first hand.

    1. Jim – I’m sad to hear what about your experience. With thousands of interactions I’m sure I’ve screwed up more than once. However, it just doesn’t sound like me. I’m the guy who goes out of his way to visit every table at every event I’m at. I thrive on meeting people and shaking hands.

Still, I have no reason to doubt what you’ve written and offer my sincere apology.
