What I Just Learned

“Hold on,” she said. Then the clicking began.

My daughter just called. Trust me I was not first choice, but Helaine’s asleep. Still we stayed on-the-phone and chatted for a while. No complaints there.

During the conversation she received a text. She had to answer it.

“Hold on,” she said. Then the clicking began.

For the next thirty seconds I listened to her fingers tapping the message in on her BlackBerry’s keyboard!

I don’t know which is weirder, that she did it or that I instantly knew what she was doing! Never heard it before, but still unmistakable.

  1. I have 3 daughters. One I get to have actual phone conversations with almost every day, another I am limited primarily only to email because she doesn’t like to talk on the phone (the email is sent from her blackberry which makes me wonder why she has a phone since she prefers not to speak) and my youngest is hard to track down these days. I wish I had her energy. I infrequently locate her on FB after I’ve noticed she’s made a posting. Otherwise, she’s “having a life.” Oy vey!

  2. I wish my Dad would miss me like you do your daughter. He can call me for free. He just hasn’t picked up the phone in 9 years. It is always me calling him. I miss him very much so, he lives in Kentucky now, living his own life apart from us in CT at a Senior Complex. My Dad is in his 70s and can tell you heartbreaking stories/excuses on why he can’t come visit to see his grandson. I would love it if my Dad would even notice anything I do on a daily basis.

  3. Geoff my 84 year old dad (who still works full time driving livery by the way…) gets ‘concerned’ when he doesn’t get my nightly 7:30pm call. Funny, I get concerned on the nights he doesn’t answer! 🙂 It’s nice to see the fatherly perspective on those calls!

  4. I can’t STAND all this new technology!!
It is depressing when someone you’re either physically present with or talking on the phone would rather take a text than finish the conversation and read the text later. But all the kids are like that now! I had to insist my kids refrain from texting when we were out to dinner!!

I get the same feeling whenever I make the monthly call to my parents only to have them put me on hold while they take the call beeping on the other line—and they don’t even know who the other call IS!! 🙁

It’s not us, Geoff. It’s the technology. At least YOU recognize the tapping!! LOL
