Warm Fronts Aren’t As Good As They Sound

Unfortunately warm fronts come with as much baggage as Lindsay Lohan! I’m mentioning this now because a warm front is sliding by Monday.

Current US Weather Watches and Warnings

In a perfect world we’d all love warm fronts. After all a warm front means it’s getting warmer. Unfortunately warm fronts come with as much baggage as Lindsay Lohan! I’m mentioning this now because a warm front is sliding by Monday.

It’s easy to hear the warm part and think good thoughts. What’s left unsaid is warm fronts are often accompanied by clouds and precipitation.

So, yeah it gets warmer Monday, but with a price. It will not be a pretty day! We’ll have rain and some gusty wind.

Monday’s warm front is part of the system that’s been causing havoc in the Midwest Sunday. Thankfully no tornadoes, but over 220 reports of hail with twenty of those over two inches in diameter. There were also reports of wind damage–stuff like this from Kansas:

WIND DAMAGE REPORTED IN SEVERAL LOCATIONS ACROSS ANDERSON COUNTY. ROOF REMOVED FROM BARN ... WINDOWS BROKEN OUT OF HOME ... SHINGLES OFF OF HOMES ... A MISSING CARPORT.

The Storm Prediction Center has us on the periphery of thunderstorms for Monday. They don’t look to be severe if we get any at all.

Our warm front is followed by a cold front early Tuesday. That’s not our most favored time for strong storms, but it’s worth revisiting the chance for thunder later Monday when I’ve got fresher numbers.

I’m looking forward to a sunny and chilly Wednesday. That’s the best I’ve got right now.

  1. I’m looking forward to a day when the wind is not blowing people and things around and the temp is at least 50. That’s all I ask. I have leaves to rake. BTW — a CARPORT is MISSING??!

  2. Last year on Easter Sunday the family was out on the patio enjoying the warm weather. No jackets or coats. Somehow I don’t think we’ll repeat that this year.

  3. I have a question unrelated to this particular blog. For years, we thought that the warmest part of the day was 1-2PM. Lately we’ve been noticing that it’s 5PM. What’s up? Does this happen at a particular time of year, Spring and Fall, or has the climate changed? You were the first person we thought of to give a scientific explanation. Thanks for your continuing reports.

  4. Thanks for the report – it’s so damp out that it doesn’t feel much like a warm front. (“As much baggage as Lindsay Lohan?” Love it.)

  5. Nothing like being net control last night on the severe weather net and getting a pile up of “severe hail” reports….most over 2″. And then realizing I only missed the 2″ hail at my QTH by about a mile.
