Tuesday afternoon on FoxCT I performed an oscillating starch clock experiment. I love doing this. It’s incredibly visible. If you look carefully you can see I’m petrified it won’t work. Rachel Lutzker on the other hand is just petrified!
Thanks to Dr. Eric Mahan at the University of Hartford for getting me set up.

That is so cool Geoff! 😀
Wow, that was very cool… (including the momentary panic when it wasn’t changing color!)..thanks for putting it on the web!
Geoff,
I have to say that is really cool
Very cool, Geoff
Don Herbert would be so proud!
We now watch the foxct news mainly to see your experiments. That was so wild! We now have two favorite meteorologists you and Rachel Frank. Too bad you can’t do the weather together. It would be ALMOST (nothing will replace you and Nyberg!)like old times bantering back and forth.
You said it would be cool……and it was VERY COOL !
Geoff, question…..how long will the reactions take place? indefinately?
Have I told you lately how proud I am of you???
See http://chemistry.about.com/cs/demonstrations/a/aa050204a.htm
According to this article, it will keep going back and forth for 3-5 minutes before settling at the blue color. The complete explanation is in the article. Interesting stuff.
I have a chemistry degree and have been working as a chemist for over 20 years, but I’ve never seen this experiment. Geoff, you looked like a pro out there.
i’ll take one with lime…shaken not stirred.
All I see is a picture and the article. Where is the video link?
I don’t suppose it’s material to the experiment, but Rachel doesn’t look like the fox (on Fox??) on the billboard for that radio station?
Thanks Geoff,
Alexis and I really enjoyed watching this! (very cool said the 11 year old, her mom thought so too!)
Why is it called a starch CLOCK? (Duh.)
Because it can accurately be controlled for time by varying the ratios.
Thanks so much for posting! Really cool….
Can it be done with out the fancy magnetic mixer?
So cool!!! We home school my 9 year old and she loves Bill Nye the Science Guy. I think she will now love “Geoff Fox – Science Rocks” guy… yes, I want credit if you use that LOL!!! Keep up good work!!!
