World’s Coolest Coke Machine (video)

What I like the most is this particular machine accomplishes its goal of serving cold soda by replicating what a human would do! In that way it’s very Rube Golberg-ish.

Maybe I’ve just been weakened because of the ease of making a video at the drop of a hat, but I wanted you to see this Coke machine! It’s at work in the break room on the third floor. It is a geek’s delight.

What do you think?

  1. LOL…How easily you can be amused Geoff. The one good thing about this machine is that your soda is not dropping down from up above so you can get good and wet when you open it.

  2. We’ve had these at Southern Connecticut State Univ. for the last couple of semesters. They don’t seem to jam/break anywhere near as much as typical vending machines do.

  3. There is one of these at the Yale Smillow Cancer Center, floor 4 – it is cool to watch. That one has the 20 ounce bottles in it and the bottom shoot rotates around instead of tilting. Always nice to get something cold that can be opened right away for the ride home after appointments.

  4. Geoff-

At Sennheiser’s in Old Lyme we have a similar unit which is not quite as gentle. In fact it is as gentle as someone dropping a grand piano down a flight of stairs. You do not open a carbonated beverage too quickly, for obvious reasons!

  5. We have a similar machine here that dispenses 20 ounce plastic bottles. It has a picker with a conveyor belt on it that moves up or down to the level of the bottle you select. The bottle is kicked forward as the conveyor belt moves and the bottle is set on its side. Then the picker moves to the output slot and gently puts the bottle into it. It’s obviously designed to attract and entertain engineers. Makes neat mechanical servo noises when it operates, and is quite fast.

The other fun one dispenses ice cream bars and other stuff, like ice cream sandwiches. This one has a freezer in it. When you make a selection, the freezer lid opens, and a vacuum hose is positioned above the slot the treat is in. The vacuum is turned on, and the hose descends into the slot, grabs the treat by the wrapper, then pulls up, moves forward and drops it into the access area. When the item is well and truly dropped, the arm retracts, and the lid closes. Another engineer-attractor, IMHO. I’ve seen these in airports as well.

  6. I’ve never seen a machine like that and it only costs $1! I don’t know which amazes me more, the operation or the cost.
