San Juan Radar’s Down

THE FAA SAN JUAN WSR-88D DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR (TJUA) HAS GONE DOWN.

I can’t remember seeing this as a tropical system approached. The San Juan radar is down!

THE FAA SAN JUAN WSR-88D DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR (TJUA) HAS GONE DOWN…MOSTLY LIKELY DUE TO A LOSS OF POWER AT THE CAYEY RADAR SITE…AS RAIN BANDS ASSOCIATED WITH TROPICAL STORM IRENE MOVED ACROSS THAT AREA. WE ARE UNABLE TO RESTART THE RADAR AT THIS TIME AND FAA AOCC HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. RESTORATION TIME IS UNKNOWN.

There’s another radar at the airport. It’s not as good, but it’s on!

  1. Wow. This sounds ominous. Irene must be very bad. I hope it loses strength before it gets to our area. I like a good hurricane, but I don’t like the damage it does. Thanks for the updates Geoff. I know I can count on you to give the best information possible (even on your day off). 🙂

  2. GEOFF,I hope this isn’t an omen?? We can BARELY afford to have a big storm hit CT, with all the budget cuts, our state is ill prepared. I live near the coast, in WEST HAVEN, not good news for me,UGH!!!

    1. No one is saying it’s coming to Connecticut. If it comes, the storm is a week away. Part of my job is understanding when and when not to warn. Not yet. Hopefully not period.

  3. Thanks,GEOFF! Thats very reassuring!!! I lived in FAIR HAVEN, in 1985,during HURRICANE GLORIA, not fun, i assure you!!!

  4. This is interesting. I get my trusted Hurricane information for here in Florida from a Friend in CT. I’m sure we here in BS, will have the best information available. I’ll keep an eye open down the street.
