Was The Irene Forecast Any Good? NOAA Provides The Video

The video shows actual satellite imagery of Hurricane Irene accompanied by the four day forecast. It’s pretty astounding stuff.

Forecasts for tropical weather are often quite variable. The Hurricane Center constantly reminds local forecasters like me of their limits. Four days out forecasts average a 200 mile error! That’s why video just released by NOAA (The Hurricane Center’s parent agency) is so amazing.

I wish they all could be this accurate.

  1. That is pretty amazing to see. I was just reading an article about the advances in forecasting and how that in turn saves lives and money. Do you think the intensity forecast will ever get this accurate?

  2. Well Done! You and others had commented on the fact that all the models seemed to be in agreement and how unusual that was…. Good data yielding good results. I think that’s what’s improved over time, our data gathering ability.

  3. Absolutely amazing. The data gathering just keeps getting better and better and saves more and more lives. Well done Geoff.

  4. Geoff,

I always wish they all could be this accurate. But I always think mother nature has her own way. Storm decides which way to go.All these people do is use that piece of software which gives a whole bunch of spaghetti models which I think are getting better. You are the best Geoff. Thank you for all the valuable info.
