Childhood Memories… But Not My Childhood

I was not a David the Gnome fan. Sorry Ghost of Tom Bosley. Stef had a few “Wee Sing in Sillyville” VHS cassettes. A pox on your house too!

I spent some time on YouTube this weekend. I was going through kid’s shows. Nope, they weren’t the kid’s shows I watched growing up, but the ones I watched alongside Stef.

Yes, I had my favorites. There were dogs too!

I was not a David the Gnome fan. Sorry Ghost of Tom Bosley.

Stef had a few “Wee Sing in Sillyville” VHS cassettes. A pox on your house too!

I loved Sesame Street. Stef watched in the Gina era. Most of the other regulars had found a way to minimize their involvement by then. Gina seemed the all purpose go-to human in the late 80s/early 90s.

Stef was saturated with Sesame Street because of advice given us by a friend. He told he he and his wife made long VHS Sesame Street airchecks which they’d plunk in the VCR whenever they needed a break from parenting.

It worked for me.

We also spent a lot of time with Sharon, Lois and Bram. They helped Stef learn the world from A to Zed!

Sharon, Lois and Bram specialized in public domain kids songs and cheesy over-the-top, overacted skits.

The show featured Eric Nagler. We don’t know anything about Eric, except that he got screwed in the billing!

Sharon, Lois and Bram are best known for their rendition of Skinamarinky Dinky Dink which ended every show.

In spite of my protestations the show was sweet and it was obvious S, L & B understood their obligation to kids.

My favorite show for Stef was Eureeka’s Castle. Wikipedia says “The show follows various puppet characters (in the style of Sesame Street), including Eureeka, a sorceress in training. She and her friends live in a wind-up castle music box owned by a friendly giant.”

Maybe. I’ve forgotten the details. All I remember is the characters were warm and friendly and flawed, as real people are flawed.

There’s a lot of cool stuff on YouTube. Little is cooler than this.

  1. I think I’m a couple years younger than Stef, and Eureeka’s Castle was my favorite show as a kid too.

In fact as a kid, I watched and enjoyed everything you mentioned in this post!

  2. Loved the bat with glasses! We were also fans of Little Bear and Franklin and if they were still on TV, I would watch them by myself! 🙂

  3. We took my son to see Sharon, Lois and Bram (and the Elephant) at the Oakdale Theater somewhere around 1991. He was enthralled. We had the cassette tapes and used to listen to them in the car. Wonderful memories!

  4. Those were some of my son’s favorite shows also. I remember when Nick first came on the air they did a preschool 9am-2pm without commercials except for a set around noon. Warm, sweet, and innocent shows with just enough parent aimed humor to keep my interest. Miss those days.

  5. Aww! Me and my brother used to love Sharon, Lois, and Bram! And “Eureka’s Castle” was another on of our favorites. We did, however, love David the Gnome. Another show we used to watch was “Fred Penner’s Place.” All I remember was a folky-looking guy with a beard who would go out in the forest and play a guitar and mouth harp.
