There was flooding this morning in the Hartford suburbs and other scattered spots in Connecticut. For many people this was as much flooding as they could remember. In some towns cars were submerged right up to the headlights.
Was this the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee? Yes, but that’s not the whole story.
As was the case in the ’55 Connecticut floods one monumental storm is not enough. It took three ex-hurricanes then. It’s taken two now.
There’s no doubt the flooding was as bad because we’d already been softened up by Hurricane Irene. Though flood waters had subsided the ground remained near saturation. There was no place for today’s deluge to go but low lying land.
It’s not like we’re done with Irene. Just today I drove out of my neighborhood behind a town truck hauling branches, limbs and small trees. Will anyone have to pay for firewood this winter?
Down on Shepard Avenue most of the tree that blocked the road just after Irene is gone. Most, not all.
I’m not sure what the home owner has planned for this massive section of the trunk. Maybe he’ll just leave it on his lawn as a reminder that storms like Irene are incredibly strong and their impact remains long after the storm departs.
Irene should be a retired name. My freind had a wedding and got caught up in that. Look at all the destruction it gave Vermont. They say Irene was overrated; I beg to differ.
