We’ve Found Our Dog

We wanted a small young female who needed to be rescued. I think we’ve found Doppler!

For the past few months Helaine and I have discussed adopting a dog. We wanted a small young female who needed to be rescued. I think we’ve found Doppler! We found her at the animal shelter in Wallingford.

As it turns out the dog we’ll be getting Friday isn’t the dog we originally asked about. She was already spoken for.

Here’s part of the note I received from Dean, an animal control officer. It’s sad and probably much too common.

We do also have two Maltipoos, a male and a female, that are not online yet. We have not put them up yet because they needed a little TLC. They were abandoned, blocked in a baseball field dugout. They were very thin, their coats were matted to their skin and their nails were to the point of curling. The poor things were sad and scared. After a good bath and haircut, and a much needed pedicure, two new, happy dogs appeared!. They are the sweetest. They are socialable and love everyone.

I went to the shelter this afternoon to meet the dog they’re calling Charlotte, but who will become Doppler.

She is sweet and friendly–a licker. As far as I can tell she’s not much of a barker (in a shelter there’s plenty of encouragement to bark from the other inmates). She was playful without being hyper.

We’ve got some things to prepare so she’ll be staying in Wallingford until Friday.

There are a few things we need and for one of them I’m turning to you. We need to find someone to take care of her when we go away–doggie daycare. We’d prefer a place that takes care of dogs without keeping them crated or someone who’d come to our house to walk and play with her.

Meanwhile we’re very excited. We hope Doppler is too.

  1. Me, my girlfriend and our son think you are getting the most WONDERFUL doggie, Geoff! Congrats to Helaine and you for getting such a “keeper”! 😀 Have FUN with Doppler!!!!

  2. Congratulations on the new addition to your family. I am so happy that you are adopting and are speaking about this publicly. There are so many perfectly good animals at shelters that need to be adopted. I adopted my dog from the Branford Shelter five years ago and it was one of my better decisions in life. You will have years of unconditional love from Doppler.
Best of luck to all of you!
PS I have heard very good things about The Crate Escape in Wallingford.

  3. There’s also a place called The Crate Escape, which is a daycare where they get to run around with other dogs. No cages. I’m not sure where they’re located though. I work in a vet hospital and we refer a lot of people to them.

  4. Hi Geoff,
Good luck with your new little one, My dog Summer looks just like Doppler. Please post pictures of her and keep us updated on her when you get her home. She is a lucky pup!!!

  5. Excellent news! I loved seeing Ivy on the air and hope Fox will let you bring Doppler on down the road. We are getting a rescue dog too. It is awful what they have experienced but great that they can now have the life they deserve 🙂

  6. Congratulations on adopting Doppler. We also rescued our dog Duncan in 2001 for the Monro Shelter. He is the BEST dog we have ever had. He has added so much enjoyment to our lives & give us unconditional love.
    Best wishes with Doppler.
Try the National Association of Pet Sitters to find a good one near you:

  7. What a sweet face!!! She looks so happy! Mazel Tov on the new addition to the family. I thought of you last week, there was a cutie pie on the PAWS website. I sent you the link but not sure if you had gotten it.

  8. Holiday Pet Lodge in Wallingford! They will take excellent care of that precious dog!

Is the other one still available? That picture of them is so darn cute I’m trying to talk my husband into getting one! My excuse has always been “I can’t do that to Chuckie (our 14 yr old cat)” now I’m like screw him!

  9. The Crate Escape in Wallingford is great. Chris and her staff are the best. It’s a huge dog party all day. We were broken hearted when our pet sitter moved out of state 2 years ago. Crate Escape was recommended by a veterinarian friend and we gave it a try. Or dogs love it and so do we.

  10. Congrats to all of you! We have been using Waggin’ Tails pet sitting service for the past 7 years-they are licensed, bonded and insured and do an outstanding job! They even leave a detailed daily “report card” to let you know how everything went. You can check them out on line.

  11. Wow…Doppler looks like a sweetie. We have a Lhasa (Bailey) and a black lab and love them both!!! Anytime you need a sitter let me know!!! Bailey is always looking for a playmate. She get along very well with other dogs, and cats. Angel (the lab) is old and just happy to sleep in the sun outside and lets Bailey jump on her when she wants to play. I am SO VERY happy for you and Helaine!!

  12. My friend Cindy is a dog groomer and pet sits. She has plenty of references and will travel. What a precious addition to your family! Way to go in adopting!! And saving her llife! Let me know if you would like her number!;)

  13. Awww, congrats on the new family member!! She’s adorable.

I have a friend who works at Petco in Hamden and pet-sits on the side. She has taken very good care of our cats, and she also takes excellent care of a mutual friend’s dog. She’s very reliable and I have no reservations recommending her. Happy to send you her contact info if you want. She lives in New Haven and has her own transportation to get around the area.

  14. Another vote for Crate Escape…Chris and her staff are the BEST with our dog. He’s there twice a week and every time we go out of town. When he stays over, he’s only in a kennel at night; during the day he is out playing with all of his pals.

Check them out. And congrats on the new member of the family!

  15. I Rescued a Human Today.

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.

I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so
    she wouldn’t be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my
cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers
get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card, I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the
future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life. She got down on
her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up
against the bars to comfort her.

Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her
cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened
and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her
safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see
that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor.
So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At
    least I could save one.

    I rescued a human today.

    Happy for you ALL!!

  16. Have you thought about keeping the two dogs together and adopting both of them? We have two Schnoodles and find that two is really no harder than one (we got them 3 years apart). We find that our 6 year old dog requires a little less attention from the humans now that he has his 3 year old sister! They keep eachother company and it’s very comforting to us knowing that they are always together! At any rate, MAZEL TOV on the new baby! Couldn’t be happier that you will have a furry one to love!

  17. I have NEVER paid for a dog, other than adoption fees! They are so grateful that someone loves them enough to rescue them, and they will show you every day of their blessed little lives! Good goin Geoff, and lots of love from Doppler!!!!

  18. She is awfully cute, and it’s heartwarming to know that she will have a loving home now! I’m resisting the urge to say, awwwwwww!!

  19. Geoff, please take both dogs !! They are so much better off being with one of their own kind, as well as their humans.
Adoption is sooo much better than going to a breeder.

    1. I agree with Carroll,,,
Its better for the dogs to stay together, less confusion and they will keep each other company, which is a good thing, as Martha would say.

  20. We happen to have a black Maltipoo and are crazy about her. She is very much a ‘licker’ and has done some considerable damage to area rugs, woodwork, furniture and bedspreads with her continual chewing. Still love her though!! You will not be disappointed.

  21. Oh, she is so cute, and I LOVE her name!!! You’ve gotta taken ’em both — have you thought about that at all?? What bastards people are to treat animals so badly…and yes, it’s all too common.

I don’t know a thing about daycare facilities for dogs, but up until this year I’ve cared for three pit bulls — one of them actually a pit bull/Doberman mix and one other a pit bull/Sharpei. (If you’d told me I’d be doing this I’d have said you’re crazy.) When they moved to California wine country the owners flew me out there (not a bad gig!) Sadly my babies are all gone now…but I do dog/cat/house sit and have the best of references, so if you (or anybody else reading this!!!?) need someone, let me know if I can help — I’m cheap and will (obviously) travel.

Go get the other dog!! One for you and one for Helaine!! And congratulations — I am so happy for you guys.

  22. Oh, Kim. Thanks for the tears. Very sweet but sad story you wrote. Geoff, this is wonderful! Doppler….figures! She is one lucky little dog. Being with you and Helaine will help make up for her horrible beginning. I am happy for all 3 of you!

  23. What a cutie! If you can adopt both, that would be wonderful. We adopted 2 and they play with each other and keep each other company when we are not home. Doppler is a lucky girl. Mazel tov with your new addition.

  24. Congratulations to you for choosing to give Doppler a second chance at loving a family. I’ve had 3 shelter dogs over time and I have always felt honored to have them in my life. Enjoy!

  25. Congrats on your new beautiful addition! We have a maltese and absolutely love him! He is so affectionate and looks just like Doppler! May you have many years of joy and love with her!

  26. Nice, very nice. Much luck and love with the pup. Doppler would be breakfast for my two boys. (Actually Tank would lick Doppler to death).

    1. I am so excited to hear about Doppler!!!
My memory of Ivey on the set of Ch.8…I will never forget how laid back she was and beautiful.
I think you should take the little one too 🙂
Perhaps Doppler could stay with Tallulah…what do you think?
Wishing you the best Geoff…you deserve it!!

  27. Doppler is beautiful!! She looks alot like my rescue Lhasa Mikey, from the Meriden Humane Society. I’ve always liked Holiday Pet Lodge too. And as others have already mentioned, get the other if you can. They would be so happy together.

  28. Congrats to you for adopting a shelter pet! We have 7 rescues and I wish I could rescue them all.
I was at the shelter after these 2 babies were cleaned up…such a sad story. They are such resilient, happy pups.I volunteer for (Lisa)the shelter and post pictures of the orphans, and am thrilled as each one is adopted. As I also work at a vet hospital, I occasionally get to see the rescues in their new environment, and nothing can make me happier. I was so excited when Lisa told me you were adopting “Doppler”. You might have a greater influence on people looking to “buy” new pets over the coming holiday season. There are so many shelter pets looking for forever, loving homes, I am constantly urging to “adopt, don’t shop”, and remember to donate goods (food, treats, bedding, cleaning supplies) and time (dog walking, etc) to local shelters. Best wishes with your new baby!

  29. Lisa and Dean are the most caring and compassionate caregivers to their fur babies. The Wallingford Animal Shelter is actually our municipal pound. We are 1 of very few pounds that do not euthanize animals after a limited amount of time to make more room.God always seems to make way to keep them until they can find their forever homes. If your interested in a dog or cat consider adoption.DON’T SHOP…ADOPT!!!
Good for you Geoff,Helaine, & Doppler.

  30. Congratulations on your new addition. We have used “The Barking Lot” on Sherman Ave in Hamden for our Bo. He loves it there! Day care during the day, very social with indoor and outdoor socializing/play time and your choice of kennel size for night time, some even have toddler beds for the “children” to get a good night’s rest.

  31. Looks like you got a ton of suggestions. I just took mine to the Barking Lot today on Sherman Avenue. Friendly staff, clean place, happy dogs (not crated). My dog did well and is tired now 🙂 Many people I’ve met (amazing how many people you meet when you have a dog!) recommended it 🙂

  32. My vote goes to Holiday Pet Lodge in Wallingford. My family has been bringing dogs there for over 50 years. Our dogs always liked going there!

  33. Best thing we ever did was go back and rescue the brother of our first Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix–they entertain each other, sleep all mixed together in a pile in cold weather, and just love being together.

Two crazies, true, but they are so loving and happy to be in our pack…please consider a pair of doge–just one gets lonely.

  34. Love the name. Paws in Cheshire is good. Rocco was the first guest when they opened. (Doberman that we rescued 8 years ago) Dr. Kristine Matz in Cheshire for a vet, right off Route 10 less than 10 minutes away, and yes she will make house calls if you need. Yes, HOUSE CALLS. 203-439-2597

I am right down the hill so anytime Doppler needs someone, just give a yell. SERIOUSLY. Enjoy your new friend.

  35. Congratulations!! Doppler is such a cutie and I’m so happy for all of you! Rescue is definitely the way to go. We rescued our dog, Maggie 1 1/2 years ago and she has been the sweetest and best dog we have ever had. As for doggy daycare, I have always heard nothing but good things about Holiday Pet Lodge in Wallingford. I used to work at an animal hospital in North Haven and the vets there always recommended them for boarding as well as word of mouth from pet owners.
Good luck and I hope you all have many happy years together!

  36. Congrats on your new fur baby!!!! We have a Maltese, Molly, a licker and a bit yappy, but she’s a real sweetheart…..also have a rescued Greyhound, Honey…. 40 mph couch potato….they are so gentle and loving..would love to rescue them all…thanks for going public with adopting…..two are twice as nice, they keep each other company…..

  37. Geoff. I use camelot kennels in wolcott. Have used them many times and they actaully kive upstairs from the kennels. Tbey are rught across the street from the fire academy.
