The Child Is Sick

It’s tough being a parent when your child (even a grown child) is a full continent away. I gave her the standard advice on gargling, lozenges, avoiding chocolate and milk products.

Helaine told me Stef isn’t feeling well. I went on IM this afternoon to say hi and see if anything had changed.

stef: i think i’m dying. i have the worst sore throat ever

So powerless!

  1. It is hard to avoid chocolate when you do not feel well.. but plenty of liquids, vit c and zinc and lots of homemade or close to it chicken soup!

  2. I can sympathize with her ahhhhh she getting over the same nonsense. Tell her it will get better! I started last Wed and finally feeling like a human again.

  4. Once I was staying with a friend in CA and we both came down with the bona fide flu. Fever, headache, runny nose, cough, the sickest I think I have ever been. I can’t tell you how much I wanted my mother…and I was 46 years old!!!

  5. I can so sympathize! My daughter recently did a semester of grad school in London. She got sick and I felt so helpless! Althought it is amazing how quickly you can have cold meds and soup delivered with the power of the Internet! 🙂 I’m certain you made your daughter smile! Hope she is feeling better!

  6. Geoff, Many CT residents are sick with Strep Throat infections. With schools now back in session, many more Strep cases plus other illnesses will be making the rounds. Maybe poor Stef returned to CA with Strep before it became fullblown. Hopefully not! A doctor visit may be needed to get Stef feeling better sooner than later. I’m also one of the many parents who suffers with deep concern for their sick adult child (in late 30’s) who live in the West.
    Hang in there.

  7. I hear it from my sister about the distance to her daughter. sis lives in Connecticut, daughter in Spokane Washington. she’s having a baby and is also getting migraines. yes, the distance is having an effect on her. the strain of not being able to run right over and comfort and nurse is driving my sister nuts. it extends to her brother too (me).

  8. “It’s” going around all over CT. Starts with a wicked sore throat and then turns into a full blown “head cold” – sinus congestion and pressure enough to make you cry. Then if you are not careful and don’t rest enough, it goes into your lungs and it gives you a nasty cough. It’s not Flu (no fever or muscle aches, etc.). I came down with it last Friday and am still coughing and slightly congested but am now on the down hill side of the mountain. Tell Stef: lots and lots of non-caffeinated fluids, Mucinex really helps, and Emergen-C (little packets of tasty fruit flavored 1000 mg. vitamin C and minerals that you mix with water) which will really help. Poor baby! She’ll be OK in due time.

  9. It doesn’t matter how old your child is, you still hurt for them when they hurt and you feel awful when they are sick, even with something minor. I sympathize with YOU, Geoff!
