The New Lobbyists

We are the new lobbyists! That’s got to be scary to politicians used to playing by the old rules.

The House and Senate were about to pass hardnosed anti-piracy legislation (SOPA & PIPA) when a funny thing happened. People spoke up. Congress backed down.

A Eureka&#185 moment!

As the Internet transformed shopping and news and just about everything else it is about to transform government and governance. Voices can be amassed in numbers never before seen. “People power” might actually be at hand.

We are the new lobbyists! That’s got to be scary to politicians used to playing by the old rules.

Too bad.

&#185 – From Wikipedia: This exclamation is most famously attributed to the ancient Greek scholar Archimedes. He reportedly proclaimed “Eureka!” when he stepped into a bath and noticed that the water level rose—he suddenly understood that the volume of water displaced must be equal to the volume of the part of his body he had submerged

  1. Power to the People….(remember that song?)…Geoff you always teach me something, and in turn I pass it along to my daughter. Thanks

  2. It would be nice if the electronic “voice of the people” could influence our politico to the extent that they pay for their own health insurances, and re-align their salaries with those of us that actually work for a living. Not to mention all the other “perks” that go along with being a professional politician.

  3. I agree with “Big Frank” if they really worked EVERYDAY like we do ( not all those weeks off) and had to pay for all the insurances etc. without all their “perks” then MAYBE they would realize what the average person has to deal with. I would love to see them get a “wake up call” from Jonh Q. Public really soon, maybe it might help us all.

  4. Geoff, hardly power the people. Many corporations are behind banning this bill as well, and if not for google, Wikipedia, etc people would just shrug their shoulders.

  5. Geoff

Maybe another example of the Internet power, of the “people”:

After your TV 8 fiasco – I and MANY others widely posted our support for Geoff. Your broad appeal, to the CT TV viewers, was evidenced by the extensive Internet support you received. You acknowledged that support aided yourself, when you were hired for a newly created position at Fox (and maybe[?] as a Subaru spokesman).

PS On a negative note, that Internet response may have been a factor as to why the current TV 8 managmenet chose to not ask you to make an on air comment, following the recent passing of Dr Mel. Obvioulsy several others, with far less prior experience working with Mel, were asked.

  6. For Mike – I wholeheartedly disagree – the temporary defeat of SOPA and PIPA was a result of PEOPLE contacting their elected representatives and expressing their opposition to the bills. It was NOT just corporate opposition.
As Geoff said, the people have proved once again that, albeit on occasion, the power of the people does flex its muscle and can tell Congress that “…I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this any more…”.
