A Night With My Weather Maps

Mostly we’ll see 2-4″ statewide (and by 2-4″ I mean 1-5″). In other words enough you won’t want to drive in it, but not enough to leave a lasting impression.

Here it is 1:00 in the morning, I’m not working until Sunday, but I’m sitting in the family room with my laptop watching animated forecast maps and studying charts. I am so nerdy. This is what I was meant to do.

The Saturday storm is a fast moving clipper. No one needs to go nuts. Most roads should be good-to-go by Saturday night.

I’m currently looking closely at three models: NAM, GFS and HRRR. They’re all similar in their solution. All snow.

Exact accumulations forecasts are never spot on. Mostly we’ll see 2-4″ statewide (and by 2-4″ I mean 1-5″). In other words enough you won’t want to drive in it, but not enough to leave a lasting impression.

The storm will pass south of us. The bulk of the snow should fall between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM on the shoreline and 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM inland.

It will be cold. Some inland spots might stay in the teens though most will be in the low twenties. On the shore it will be closer to 30&#176.

Since I’ve been doing the Premier Subaru ads I’ve been promising I’d get some snow driving video. Tomorrow’s the day.

  1. I’m one of those who love snow so I am pleased with the forecast. I hope your snow driving video will show people HOW to drive in the snow. Since we really don’t get as much snow as we used to (last year an exception), it seems most folks don’t know how to drive in it anymore! I live on a sloping hill – no problem if you know what you’re doing but people don’t so they get stuck. Monday night one guy was blowing his horn at the cars that were stuck like that was going to help. We sit in the window and watch – sometimes its better than what’s on TV. Except for your segment of course. 🙂

  2. Up until this moment, I was a bit worried about what to expect tomorrow..only because I didn’t hear or read about the outcome from you..until now. You are one of the few that I listen to when it comes to weather and science and nerdy stuff… 🙂

  3. Compared to last winter I’ll take it! I bought a snowblower halfway thru last winter because the plow guy was bathing in my $. This winter I was wondering if I’d get to use it at all. As long as I don’t have to use a roof rake I’m happy!

  4. Geoff,

It is 72 degrees here in Houston at 4am. It’s awful. Fortunately, we are moving back to CT this week. Seeing this forecast is a reminder I made the right decision. We literally had no winter down here at all.

  5. Boy Scout function this morning in Clinton…we are going on with it. This is New England, who’s afraid of a little snow? Geoff, can you slow it down a bit for us? 😉

  6. Love this!!! I have not seen a flake here on the shore until the other day, and rain washed it away within an hour of it falling. Glad this happened on the weekend. No school closing means they get out earlier. We already lost a few days because of Irene, and they have already taken away their winter vacation (it is just 2 days). Gonna just sit back, relax and enjoy!

  7. I’m responsible for submitting closure information to all the local news stations for the school where I work. For all except one station, one can submit their closure information online. On that one exception, one still has to call in their codes to that stations automated telephone system. And this morning, I could swear that that news station (which I shall not name) still uses your voice, Geoff, for the instructions/codes! I hope you are getting residuals 😉

  8. This should be called the Dr. Mel storm, you know he sent it down !

On a bright note it’s Jan 21 and the first time we are talking about any major amount of snow (I don’t consider the halloween storm real, I mowed my lawn the next week, might just as well have been another hurricane!)…….. 5-6 weeks and the worst “should” be behind us !!!!!

    Pitchers and catchers very soon!

  9. Geoff, have enjoy you now since I moved here seven years ago. I also have enjoyed getting to watch Ms. Frank as she seems to be just as energetic and nerdy as you in your weather passion. Here’s the question. You all keep score around the office? She was predicting 3-6 inches on her blog, here you say 2-4 which is really 1-5. Who wins? If you need a ref, I would be glad to look over the data for you all and would love to see payment for this bet on air at the 10/11 pm news sometime come spring. Nothing like a little friendly rivalry. You enjoy some fantasy football, why not make a fantasy weather predicting league between some friends. : )

  10. Is there such as a thing as “Weather Addiction”? Have you ever thought of being a “Storm Chaser”? Now those guys are really addicted !! We would NOT want to lose you again(been there, done that LAST January).
