Santorum? Really?

I want Romney as the nominee because if President Obama loses I don’t want the winner to be a scary person. Which brings me to Rick Santorum.

It’s no secret to readers of my blog I’m politically liberal progressive. It probably is a surprise I’m hopeful the Republican nominee will be Mitt Romney. He’s the Republican who will present the biggest campaign challenge to President Obama.

I want Romney as the nominee because if President Obama loses I don’t want the winner to be a scary person. Which brings me to Rick Santorum.

He first came on my radar while he was serving in the Senate from Pennsylvania. He was pushing legislation to eviscerate the National Weather Service. The prevailing wisdom was this was some sort of gesture to State College, Pennsylvania’s AccuWeather.

Here are some of his political positions. Basically if he’s for something I’m probably against it.

Santorum is most likely unelectable. He is far more conservative and hawkish than the country as a whole. Still he went three-for-three in last night’s Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado caucuses!

How did Mitt Romney allow this to happen? Santorum didn’t just win, he annihilated Romney.

I am more confused by the state of Republican national politics than any other political issue I’ve ever followed. What are you conservatives thinking? Aren’t you interested in winning?

  1. I’m on the same page as you Geoff. I don’t want to worst candidate to win the primary, because there’s always chance he’ll beat Obama. Therefore, I’m “rooting” for Romney because he’s the least bad the GOP has right now.

    1. Sharon, it is very scary that we are left with the least of evils so far from the Republicans. Its so bad I’m even thinking Obama should be re-elected!! How scary is that?!

  2. I so agree with you Geoff. All the Republican candidates are sub par. The majority of our country is not extreme conservative. What bothers me the most are the lies they tell about President Obama just for their political gain. We are finally growing the economy. He deserves another term to see that through.

  3. Another reason why we all have to stop talking and start making sure that President Obama doesn’t lose! I still support the man.

  4. I’d rather see Gingrich as Obama’s opponent than Romney. I’m not very concerned at all about his ability to beat Obama. If he were to win, he would be unable to do anything, anyaway, because he would not have any large block of support in either house of Congress. He’d be a lame duck from day one in office. Meanwhile, one of the very important side effects of a Romney/Obama matchup is that even if Obama wins, Romney at the top of the Republican ticket will have a strong coattail effect on House, Senate, gubernatorial, and other races. If Dems want to regain ground in Congress, and across the country in state and local elections, the absolute LAST thing they want is Romney at the top of the Republican ticket.

  5. I have been SO disappointed in the Republican party. Why can’t they get their stuff together?? These results left me scratching my head…….

  6. Four years ago I wondered if the republicans really wanted to win the election. I mean really – picking Sarah Palin to run for VP? I figured they thought the country was such a mess, that they knew whoever got elected was going to be the fall guy, and they didn’t want it to be a republican.

Either they’re still thinking the same way, or they’ve all lost their minds.

If this ends up being a mess going into the convention, it wouldn’t shock me if they pulled in someone else entirely. (Jeb Bush?) I also wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up with a strong 3rd party candidate walking away with the White House…

  7. I really hope Santorum fizzles out, same with Gingrich. It’s frightening to see them talk in public. A colony on the moon and a ban on contraception? Seriously? I’m 100% with you on this one.

    1. Who is talking about a colony on the moon? Who is talking about a ban on contraception? Do you have a link to the quotes? I’d like to read that stuff.

  8. IMO, the problem is that federal level candidates don’t run the country. The big corporations and bankers do because they are the ones with all the money. Case in point: The First Lady wanted an organic garden to encourage people to eat better. Guess what? She couldn’t. Why? Because the big fertilizer companies threw a fit. This is a small thing but it shows who’s in power. In Vermont, two companies organized completely environmentally friendly dump facilities using chickens. Thousands of chickens and no chemicals. Save the towns a lot of money and pollution. The problem was the chickens provided organic fertilizer for resale. Again, the chemically induced fertilizer companies intervened. If the fertilizer companies have so much influence, imagine what other big name companies have.
I think each candidate should be given a set amount of money to campaign with and not allowed to accept money from anyone or corporation. Just pool all the contributions and may the best candidate win. Have them all take out ads in the papers and state their position on all the issues.

  9. I’m agree with Jane, 4 more years of the current president we can’t afford.
As a life long republican, the current batch of republican candidates do nothing to interest me so far, Some of them worry me on what would happen if they won.

I’m from the moderate wing of the party,(we still do exist)Just waiting until the tea party fades. They will but not until a strong candidate rises up. Some one who is fiscal conservative, and social moderate.) That should have been Romney but its not. He comes across to much out of touch To much 1 %, The silver spoon stuck up you know where.

I think while I don’t like the current administration I think it will be 4 more years of the same.
A president who will not accomplish much and a congress still locked in preventing any real change from occurring.

  10. Can’t understand why 4 more years of Mr. Obama scares Republicans. He is so very interested in compromise, yet no matter what he does, even if it is in Republican’s favor, they continue to hate the man. I cannot help but believe that racism is the undercurrent. Just yesterday:

“President Obama has nominated Jeremiah Norton — a former Treasury official under Bush and current JP Morgan executive — to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The nomination could smooth over tensions with Senate Republicans who are still incensed over Obama’s recess appointment of Richard Cordray to the Consumer Financial Protection Board and could potentially filibuster a handful of other key nominees to the FDIC and the Federal Reserve. In fact, Reuters writes that the Senate GOP leadership reportedly recommended Norton to the White House for the position.” (Washington Post)

  11. Let us all remember that it was the GOP President that left us in the mess that Obama had to try and get us out of! The one thing that holds us all back is the republicans who can’t even agree to changes they were in favor of if the president now is in agreement with, only because it would look like they were caving to Obama! Grow up people! We need to work for the common good. The members of the house and senate should be forced to exist with real life problems like the other 99% of us. You know things like paying for health insurance and wondering if your job or pension will be here tomorrow!

  12. Geoff: Romney didn’t care about those “small potato” states. The so-called “Super(?) Tuesday primaries will allocate the vast majority of delegates that the GOP want to pander to. Now, about the modified forecast for this weekend… three-to-six for me to crawl through on my way to work (Foxwoods) and back to Norwich?

  13. NWS early thinking sees possible rain-to-snow…. which would make New London County roads quite icy. However, ECMWF supposedly has a more southerly, faster-moving solution in the 12Z Thursday (for Saturday). Brad has 2-4 statewide (and, I believe, so does NWS). Santorum’s AccuWeather heads cannot touch the NWS and our local TV Wx folks! 🙂

  14. Plain and simple Obama is all about tuning the USA into a socialist state
And the problems from the past administration had the help of republicans and democrat’s. (house and senate)

    1. Ed – Do you mean Socialist as in we all split the cost of roads and schools and fire protection? Obviously this country, all countries, have certain socialist policies they follow. I think most people would say they want those socialist policies. Certainly businesses are glad the government built roads, ports and airports and that it educates their workforce.

The problem is the word “Socialist” is inflammatory and it’s used as a Molotov Cocktail by the right! It isn’t meant to say President Obama is a socialist, which he isn’t, but to associate him with something people are scared of with words they don’t fully understand.

  15. Geoff. No Molotov Cocktail intended, but yes I do think President Obama is leading us in that direction.

Going back to 2008 election cycle,

“When you spread the wealth around,” Obama had said, “it’s good for everybody.” as did Obama’s proposals to raise taxes on the wealthy and high earners for the explicit purpose of taking better care of the lower and middle classes with that redistributed money.

Now President Obama may not be a true Socialist, it sure feels that way.

What it comes down to, It depends on your point of view

The good news is we can agree to disagree and move onto the items we do agree on.
Sadly the current bunch in congress can only disagree.

Getting back to the original issue about Rick Santorum as potential nominee
I don’t think he will have enough delegates to win the nomination. If the primaries continue down the current path, you may see an Open convention. The first in over 70 plus years.

A possible Jeb Bush and Chris Christie ticket from the floor could happen.

    1. “It’s not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they’ve got a chance at success, too… My attitude is that if the economy’s good for folks from the bottom up, it’s gonna be good for everybody. If you’ve got a plumbing business, you’re gonna be better off […] if you’ve got a whole bunch of customers who can afford to hire you, and right now everybody’s so pinched that business is bad for everybody and I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.” – Barack Obama to Joe Wurzelbacher October 20, 2008.

If that qualifies you as a socialist I’m one too! Isn’t he just saying we’re better off when people have money to spend?

  16. Geoff. Thanks for the open forum, and allowing opposing views.
I am also glad we are able to keep the personal attacks out of our discussions.

    Hats off to everyone.

  17. Geoff. Only one of many items makes me feel that way. Time will tell, as I said it comes down to your point of view.
