Vegas Photos And Their Stories

Prostitution is legal in Nevada except Clark County. That’s where Vegas is located. You wouldn’t know it from the rolling billboards. They drive up-and-down the Strip all day and night.

Yes, I am fascinated by them. This is thumbing your nose at the law, right?

I’ve never been anywhere else where sex is so openly sold!

This was not a great photo taking trip. Maybe I’ve already shot what I’m going to shoot in Las Vegas?

As is the norm there are plenty of photos that didn’t make the blog or Facebook, but do have a backstory. Here are a few.

Vegas is supposed to be lit with neon. Maybe downtown on Fremont Street where it’s more of a nostalgia thing. Not on Las Vegas Boulevard where the signage is more sophisticated and high tech.

Everything is illuminated. Promotion is everywhere. There is no night on the street. All the casinos have huge standalone signs out front, most with video.

This was a window shot. Ours opened out at the bottom, but only a few inches. I wrapped the camera strap around my arm and contorted my arms and the camera as if they were going under a limbo bar! I couldn’t look through the viewfinder so it was all guesswork.

Yes, it was scary to hold it like that.

The tallest building on the Strip at 1,149 feet is the Stratosphere. This shot of it was taken from the Mirage two miles away (thanks Google maps for measuring).

I haven’t been up there in ten years, maybe longer. Photographers have to shoot through glass and can’t bring tripods. Ugh.

Two large naked mermaids greet you as you walk into the Mirage. A year or two ago they were removed, but the furor was enough to bring them back.

I am told it’s good luck to rub their breasts before you gamble and people constantly do!

The billboards mean business is good.

On our way back the plane flew near the huge wildfire in Northern Arizona. That’s smoke, not clouds you’re looking at.

By chance a westbound JetBlue flight was passing at just that moment.

Here’s a little trick. When an object is above the horizon, like that plane, it’s at a higher altitude than you. He was also miles south of us.

  1. Somehow I missed this post when you made it!

Re the Stratosphere… it’s got a significantly higher end restaurant up top (revolves 360 degrees in 90 minutes; took some getting used to!) where the entrees start around $45.

But if you go up another flight or two you can go out on an observation deck where you can shoot pictures w/o the window in the way (though I got some decent shots through the window w/ my little Olympus point ‘n’ shoot). I don’t think you can walk all the way around the top, though.
