The Kinder, Mellower, Less Confrontational Geoff

Helaine and I were watching President Obama’s press conference this afternoon.

“I can’t wait until I’m president,” I said.

I don’t remember Helaine’s exact words, but there was something about a nuclear conflagration! Presidents aren’t supposed to get into pissing matches and clearly she sees me as a pissing match provocateur.

I told her I’m a different now. I am. This is a mellower Geoff.

I’m not sure when it happened. It preceded my departure from Channel 8, but that certainly sped things up. The wheels were already turning.

I have learned not to sweat the small stuff. Hey, that’s no small thing and small things were my undoing.

I felt everything was important. Everything is not. There are times it’s OK to let stuff pass. That was a tough realization.

I still have too many political arguments online. Even those have been cut back. You have no idea how many replies I write, then toss before posting!

Does this come with age? Is that it? Have I finally made it to where chronology tells me I should be?

If you worked with me 10 years ago, I don’t think you’d recognize my demeanor today. It’s the kinder, mellower, less confrontational Geoff.

Is that a good thing? Who knows?

  1. Geoff,
It’s not a bad thing to temper justice with mercy and I think you have gone that extra mile! You have been an inspiration, a rock and an awesome entertainer over all the years you have been on TV. My kids still tease me that I had a secret crush on you 20 something years ago…but I just really enjoyed your broadcasts!

My favorite saying is “Don’t sweat the petty stuff…and don’t pet the sweatty stuff!” and I am glad you have finally come to the same conclusion!

  2. Geoff,
When there is an argument online (political, Who shot first? A: Han Solo, tastes great-less filling, etc.), I read the comments and usually there is at least one person who argues my point. If not, by the time I get around to typing in a response, I tell myself that it’s not worth it because the (usually) two sides are equally crazy.

I will say that I’ve watch you since I was in elementary/middle school, and now I’m thirty. Haha, made you feel old. Your Mr. Science segments were awesome!

  3. I think when a person has a life changing event; it does make that person wiser and more grounded however I sometimes have seen no changes either. It all depends on how you “choose” to live your life and how you “choose” to handle the big deal events that come a long in your life. Some people evolve more quickly than others and yet there are people who never do and can’t function without stress or caucus in their life, unfortunately it effects the people around them too. Those kind of people who do take things in stride tend to be happier, healthier and live longer.

  4. I heard you and Rachel were “arguing” about how much cloud cover to out in the forecast…….. I was hjalf asleep, maybe she said, but who won?

  5. I have noticed this too, after a milestone birthday, and it’s kind of nice! Letting things pass is new for me, too. I didn’t know that was an option before! Age has its rewards and being mellower is one of them. But don’t ever lose your PASSION for the things you find interesting, Geoff!

  6. geoff , i am shocked to hear this news , you definitely weather fun and was happy to see you back on tv with fox . then we moved to florida and would still tune in at 11:15 to watch online as it game me a sense of being home . hope you the best in what ever the future brings . just to let you know we could use some good weather guys here in tampa .

  7. Geoff: I, too, was saddened by the news that you will no longer be on FOX-61. I always watched your forecasts & personally, I felt that you were the most accurate meterologist. I’m sorry that things turned out this way for you, but you always seem to land on your feet. Somehow, I’m sure we’ll be seeing you again, gracing our living rooms with “Don’t go to sleep yet”….. Good Luck in whatever your next endeavor may be.
To quote Mike Boguslowski (spelling?) “I’m in YOUR corner!”
