It’s Chilly Out There

Doppler and I went for a walk around a half hour ago. Who stole spring? It’s chilly out there! Aren’t we nearly to June?

The automated weather observer at Meriden/Markham Airport reports 49&#176 with a wind chill of 44&#176.

“I didn’t know we had wind chill in May,” Helaine noted.

Ain’t it the truth! Last May 24th Meriden hit 75&#176.

I’m not sure how chilly it will get, but in their tech discussion the Weather Service office covering Meriden writes:

COLD AIR ADVECTION WILL CONTINUE BEHIND THE FRONT. THE BOUNDARY LAYER WINDS INCREASE AND KEEP MORE MIXING CONDITIONS IN PLACE. A SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN MAV/MET BLEND WAS USED FOR LOWS WHICH WILL BE IN THE UPPER 40S.

So, even though they’re forecasting lower temperatures than the computer guidance (MAV/MET), the forecast might not be cold enough! And then there’s the rain, which has been with us on-and-off for the past few days.

A low pressure system just east of Boston is the culprit. It will weaken and temperatures will become more springlike for the weekend. Not tonight.

Doppler and I both say, “No mas!”

  1. It’s just a shame that you’re gonna be missing all this weather when you move to CA where the weather is a boring 60-70 all winter during the day, dropping to 30 or 40 only at night. And a high of 110 in the summer, but it’s a dry heat.

Quite frankly, I can’t believe I might need to take my winter coat back out of the closet on Memorial Day weekend. I guess there won’t be many adventurers at the beach.

I don’t know what’s going on, but if you ask me, the seasons are shifting by at least a month.

  2. What a contrast in seasons compared to last year at this time. Currently 54 at this hour in Portsmouth, NH.

  3. I was at Ferraro’s Market in New Haven today. It was COLD inside. I had my jacket on (lesson learned from shopping in Stop and Shop after a certain date the air is cranking no matter what the weather) All the help had long pants, hoodies and gloves……I don’t blame them!!!
From the sounds of things that may be my attire tomorrow!!!!

  4. My Permanent Record,
I too am eager to get summer started. Yes this whole spring seems cooler to me. Just looking forward to Hurricane Season with another busy season expected, I wonder if this will produce cooler air/water temps in the Atlantic and if those effects will produce a less active season for us in the Northeast. Just looking for something positive to hang on too.

  5. I do a lot of work outside. I went in Friday wearing shorts, company provided polo shirt, hat and a raincoat. The temp kept dropping during the day and it got damn cold outside. I ended up staying late and having to rush home to get the plants inside for the night. Too cold for young plants right now. And miniature roses can’t tolerate cold.
This morning I was late for work because I had to dig out my long underwear, long pants, long sleeved shirt and jackets.
I’ve lived in CT my entire life and have seen all kinds of weather. But this is TOO weird! 38 degrees at the end of MAY??
