We Are All Tired!

DSC_2182I’m not sure it’s possible to express how tired I am… how tired we are. It’s 9:25 PM. Helaine went to bed around 8!

Doppler, who spent the day being praised and petted by strangers, is bushed too. She is currently in a state of suspended animation on the sofa to my right.

Tag sale day. Yikes!

DSC_2194The sale was to begin at 9:00 AM. My wake-up was at 4:40 AM when Helaine discovered the lawn sprinklers had fired. Uh oh.

Luckily, few things were hit or hurt. Still, who expects to be awakened for that? I went back to bed after assessing the situation with Helaine, but that kind of sleep is not the same.

Helaine, joined by next door neighbor Margie and friend (and Bentley’s mommy) Cheryl, were out before the official start time. The early bird predictions many of you made were for naught. There were a few before 9:00 AM, but no onslaught.

DSC_2198The first sale went to across-the-street neighbor, Joe.

I ambled out a few minutes after nine, cup of coffee in hand, as if I was an observer. That attitude quickly faded. From then until well after noon there was a steady rush of pickers.

DSC_2202We sold a lot, not everything. Much is being donated to a variety of charities. The rest hit the dumpster.

Helaine and I found that part therapeutic. It’s part of letting go. Twenty three years in this house. We have to let go!

Helaine rented fifteen industrial strength tables for the tag sale items. She’s very smart. Of course, it also meant 15 tables to knock down and carry at the end of the day.

DSC_2205Actually, most of what I remember from today has to do with carrying. That’s why I’m so physically spent.

It was great to meet those of you who came to say hello. I was touched by your kind words and how you remembered specific times I was part of your life.

People came with dogs. We love dogs. A majority of the dogs were small. Many resembled Doppler!

Every tag sale is different. This one was to save things we like, but can no longer use, and find them new homes. The money (as our prices reflected) was secondary.

In that regard… in all regards, the sale was a major success.

Our garage has been purged. Another step on-the-way to Tuesday’s move.

Thanks to Tom Powers for all the photos.

  1. Thanks for your daughter’s lamp and the sweet turtles and the beanie baby cats!! Loved meeting all the little and tiny dogs while we were there. May your new life be the best! We’ll keep your light on in Hamden!

  2. Whoa, Tuesday. It came so fast. I’m wondering how long you’re expecting it to take you to get to the west coast. I did that drive, via the southern route, about 6 years ago. I drove roughly 8 hours a day, give or take, and made it here in 7 days. It was tiring and a bit disappointing in the fact that, with all of the wonderful sites and places I could have visited, I was driving alone or rather, in the company of my little dog who was safely doggy seat belted in the back seat, and I wouldn’t have been able to bring him into most or probably any of the places I would have liked to visit. It was truly a lost opportunity.

I wish you and Helaine Godspeed, safe trip and a new and happy life. Looking back, I have to say that sometimes life throws up a curve ball, but when you take the time to reflect, you realize that this was the path you were meant to take. It just took you a few minutes to figure it out.

  3. Glad you enjoyed finding new homes for your things and wish you and your wife well on your new journey, please travel well and safely..You will be missed..

  4. Please keep your Permanent Record going so we can all keep in touch and enjoy your new adventure..Live Well , Laugh always, Love much..

  5. I wish only the best for you and your Family, I realy miss your weather on the news, I hope you do not forget your fans in CT, I am from Wallingford. I have been watching your weather forecast for years, you are truly missed. Best of luck in your future, I wish you and your family only the best!!!

  6. Glad the tag sale seemed pretty successful. Now when you get to California you can start purchasing more “stuff” to fit your new home. LOL. Have fun for the rest of your life and as someone said earlier, keep “My Permanent Record” going – that wonderful journal you’ve created. It will let us know how you are and that you’ve never forgotten us here in CT.

  7. I got to the sale about 8:50 and I think only one other person was there, very surprising. But I had my pick for a while. I am sorry I didn’t get to personally say goodbye to you Geoff — I think you were probably inside percolating your coffee! Anyhow, I found a lovely silver scotty dog figure that has found a good home in my home. Oh, and if I needed ties, your sale was the one to come to! LOL! In closing, I will always appreciate the fact you used to call my late Mother, Vera the Weatherwatcher, on the phone for her local forecast – she used to get such a kick out of that. Best wishes, Geoff to you and Helaine.

Want to wish you a Happy Father’s Day first. Sometime a door closes and another opens. It called a journey through life. Remembering I couldn’t wait till you came on with the weather. I knew the time. Watching you and the late Dr. Mel. Those were the good time. Your viewers like me have to let go but we don’t want to. You will be very, very missed. Remember you will always be in our thoughts and prayers. Be safe, be happy and enjoy your life to the fullest. Awesome weather man Geoff.

    Sincerely yours

Please keep us up dated and tell us your experiences.

  9. Good luck and travel mercies for you an Helaine. Please keep your blog going so we can keep in touch with you. You have been a fixture in CT for many of us. We will miss you being here. I enjoy your blogs and sense of humor when you write. Happy Dad’s Day!

  10. Geoff, good luck on the drive and move ! I was hoping the dumpster would have a full view so I could get a name…..we too are in purge mode, not to move, just needed and want to get a dumpster for a bit. Any recommendations?

  11. I got there late. My boss PROMISED she’d get me out by7 noon. Got out at 1 instead. Had to change, grab something to eat and get directions to your place. Even then I got lost half a dozen times (note to municipalities; visible street signs are SOOOO helpful). Glad I made it at all.
Wish I could have taken more things but I have a small place, a small car and not a lot of money. Give EVERYTHING to Goodwill, Salvation Army or whomever else is around. As long as it’s still useful they’ll find a place for it (I hate waste).
Doppler was a sweetie. If it’d been cooler I’d have brought my travelling cat Thea. She’s not afraid of dogs and is cool with riding in the car. So glad to see you and hope life in Irvine is good to you. It’ll probably be weird living somewhere that you’re not recognised on the street all the time.
