Wow–They Sit Through Credits Here

in a world posterThursday afternoon and the Foxes took in a movie. Helaine and I went to see “In A World,” Lake Bell’s ‘dramedy’ about voiceover artists, but really about family. We liked it.

The title refers to the iconic movie trailer line spoken by the late Don La Fontaine and later Hal Douglas.

Bell, who wrote and directed the film, plays Carol. She’s a voice coach and daughter of Sam (Fred Melamed), king of the voices. She’s also a frustrated voiceover artist, partially due to her father’s discouragement. He feels voice work is man’s work!

As much as voiceovers run through the movie, it’s really about family and relationships.

There were some familiar faces in cameos (Geena Davis, Eva Longoria, Jeff Garland) and big roles including two Jon Stewart alums, Dimitri Martin and Rob Corddry. Both were very good, but I’d never seen Corddry play anything but ‘the fool.’ In a part that demanded depth and emotion, he delivered. I’m impressed.

The movie ended, the credits began to roll and an interesting thing happened. Everyone stayed seated! It’s SoCal. You never know who knows whom around here. People were looking for familiar names.

  1. I always sit through the credits. Sometimes because I know everyone wants recognition and those people all worked hard on that film. Sometimes because I had a dream one time to have my name up there. And sometimes because they save the best part of the film for the very end (Most Pixar movies). It also lets all the crazies go before you head out to your car 🙂

  2. We went and saw Planes in Florida a couple of weeks ago. What shocked me there is that all of the previews were actually appropriate for my kids (it’s rated PG). Here in CT they show all kinds of PG previews before animated movies and they’re not always appropriate for children.

  3. I go to the movies every Tuesday with 3 girlfriends (Girls Nite Out) We always sit through the credits. Sometimes we see a character and can’t remember their real name, or because sometimes they will show funny out-takes. Thanks for your review…sounds like this is on our “to see” list.

  4. As I sat through the credits today I thought about why I do it. Sometimes it’s to compose myself after a really emotional movie. Sometimes to see who played whom because I think know but want make sure. Sometimes to see if there will be any outtakes or to listen to the end credit songs. And sometimes it’s just done to annoy my husband who’s always in a hurry to leave!
