Moose On The Loose In Irvine

We spent the evening with our cousins. My plan was to write about the night. It’s on hold for now.

As we left the house I saw a small black and white dog at the corner. He was piddling. There was no one with him.

I wish I knew the breed, but he was adorable. Not an in the street dog.

With Helaine and Cousin Melissa behind me, I got on my knees and held the back of my hand in his direction. He came right over.

He wore a collar.

Moose! I was holding Moose.

Melissa read the number and I dialed… five rings… voicemail. Seriously, doesn’t anyone answer calls from numbers they don’t recognize anymore? I left a message then promptly redialed.

She sounded like I’d woke her up. Probably. It was near midnight in Texas, where I was calling. Her husband was home watching Moose in Irvine.

“You saved my life,” said Moose’s dad when we handed the dog over in his garage. I’m sure. Maybe we saved Moose’s too?

Nice ending.

  1. This is one of the nicest stories I’ve heard in à while. Reading the title of this blog post caught my attention because I didn’t think there would be moose in SoCàl. Little Moose certainly is one lucky little dog. I’m actually shocked that you didn’t take a photo, lol. Sounds like you and Helaine have transitioned to your new digs rather well. You are missed in CT.

  2. Good for you! What a wonderful thing! Also, I’m impressed that you knew how to approach the dog. I love happy endings. 🙂

  3. I am surprised there was not a pic of Moose!!! Good to know that there are still good people on this planet!!!! (always knew you were one of them ) I do confess I was not caffeinated enough when I first started to read the story, and almost mistook Moose for and actual Moose!!!

  4. Good for you! It’s always nice when you can help a lost animal find his way back home.
With me it’s cats. I was walking one of my cats a couple of months ago when a kitten ran right up to us. It was too cold for him to be outside by himself so I took him inside. He looked like he’d been someones kitten because he was in good shape and didn’t have a winter coat. He also had patches of hair missing like some kids had taken scissors to his fur. I decided to find another home for him where he’d get better treatement. Luckily one of my neighbors coworkers had just lost her cat and was looking for another one. My neighbor texted her a picture of the little guy and she fell in love with him immediately. So two days later they came with a carrier and picked him up and they are so very happy with him (and he’s happy with them). So that turned out perfectly. No idea where the little guy came from or how he ended up on the street in my neighborhood but he’s in a better situation now.

    1. 793Tango. This happens quite often, just liked you described. I have been volunteering for a feral cat club since 2001. The kitten you found was lucky to find a home so fast. The shelters are loaded with animals, needing good homes. In fact most of the non-kill shelters will not even accept cats & kittens right now. Thank you for picking up the kitten and finding a new home for it.
