The Oscars As A Synergistic Social Media Triumph

Did you watch the Oscars? We did. I suspect numbers will be up this year. It has little to do with Ellen’s performance or anything on-the-show, though she and it were very entertaining.

The Oscars has written the playbook on leveraging social media. It is the synergistic wunderkind! Truly a two screen show.

If you’re on Twitter you can’t not watch the Academy Awards. It our common experience. We’re watching TV together as a family. Welcome back to the sixties.

Of course the Oscar telecast has to bring something to this stew. It’s live. It’s unpredictable. It’s enthusiastically embraced its marriage with the second screen.

Don’t underestimate that last move. Few have done it as effectively or with the ease shown by Ellen tonight.

There were Twitter references everywhere. Ellen set up the selfie you see atop this entry during the show.

Long before midnight Sunday, the photo had been retweeted more than 2 million times, breaking a record set by President Barack Obama with the picture of him hugging First Lady Michelle Obama after his re-election in 2012. Twitter also sent out an apology because all of the retweeting disrupted service for more than 20 minutes after 10 p.m. ET. – AP via npr.org

She took another with Liza Minnelli. And then there was the (real) pizza oscar pizza guydelivery guy. It’s a good night to be @BigMamasNPapas.

My last few years in TV saw a push to engage viewers via social media. We were trying to make you more ‘sticky.’

The fact I have so many followers on Facebook and Twitter speaks to my belief in that. We never did it this effectively.

Has anyone?

  1. I want to know what she did with the money she collected in the end (for the pizza–.) Also wondered what the pizza man did ‘while waiting to get paid’. Do you think they gave him a seat and let him watch??. I watched part of the pre-party on E!, but tuned in late—did your daughter get to be on TV at all?
I did think that the actual 3 hr + show was very good this year and it seemed like the audience was enjoying it—so often in the past there has been tension. The “In Memoriam” was nicely presented this year also.
Thanks for putting the Selfie on—watching them take it, and seeing the results are 2 different things. I knew that it broke the tweet record! That’s another thing I don’t know how to do—my grandkids probably do it with their eyes closed. I think that technology has progressed more in just the past 5 years, than any other period in time. I can’t even keep my computer up to date—let alone get involved with the other gadgets. My husband’s first car phone was a “brick”, and that was all he had until everything started going digital and the brick was rendered useless—that was about 7 yrs ago, and look where we are now!

    1. In January, I took a Selfie of myself. I fell out of bed and ended up with a blackeye. I sent my picture to a bunch of friends.

  2. I wonder if they gave the guy that delivered the pizza, the money that Ellen collected? It definitely would have paid for the pizza. Where did you find that group shot on the internet? I didn’t look for it. Thanks for posting it here. Ellen looked liked she really enjoyed hosting the show. How many changes of clothes did she go through? That Cinderalla dress was really funny looking on her. I had to look twice to make certain it was Ellen. Did you notice that George Cloney was missing from the audience? I wonder if he didn’t show up, because he knew wasn’t going to get an Oscar? Gravity took the lions share of the Oscars.

It seems like I’ve been watching the Oscars for years. My mother use to design gowns for some of the the women at the Academy Awards, but she quit doing it years ago, but she always watch the show until she passed away.

    1. George Clooney was not there because he was away filming, I think he was out of the country. I saw him in an interview and when asked if he’d be there that was his reply.

  3. I’m not a fan of Ellen, but I have to admit that she did a good job to say the least. When it comes to social media & TV personalities, CT has the ones that do it and those who don’t and the ones who do it do it big time and succeed, those who don’t don’t succeed. It’s a matter of personal option. My take is that the people in TV who opt not to be that involved in social media have a misconception about it or who pick and choose who they want to be friends with at same time.

  4. I read an article today that said Ellen collected 600.00 in the hat and threw in 400.00 of her own money. She gave the pizza guy the 1000.00 on her show yesterday.

    1. Wow, I bet no other pizza delivery man ever collected that much money, plus ended up on the Academy Awards. Thanks for posting this information. He was on the Pier Morgan show last night, but they didn’t discuss how much money he got.

  5. Yeah–I just heard that on the radio news break. He will certainly have something to tell his grandkids–some day. I didn’t watch Pierce Morgan last night as our TV guide showed something else in that time slot (other than Pierce.) Did you read the article about CNN discontinuing the Peirce Morgan show, sometime this month–due to low ratings. I figure CNN wasn’t the only show with low ratings—while the olympics were on! Just when you get used to something—it’s gone!
