The Insurance Catch-22

I am eligible for coverage outside the open enrollment period because my COBRA coverage is expiring, but I can’t apply until it expires! At the point my insurance doesn’t go into effect until June 1.

As far as I can tell there’s NO way for us to have continuous medical coverage… and I’ve tried. It’s all very frustrating.

My COBRA insurance coverage expires this week. It’s time to get a policy here in California.

Yes, it’s expensive! I guess I knew that going in.

More than anything the whole process is a royal pain. There are so many choices with partial or minimal explanations. I’m choosing without totally understanding what I’m buying.

A few minutes later the site allowed me to proceed anyway. Then it presented me with the Catch-22.

I am eligible for coverage outside the open enrollment period because my COBRA coverage is expiring. I can’t apply until it expires! At that point my insurance doesn’t go into effect until June 1–a few weeks after the old coverage is gone.

We will have to stay inside, covered in bubble wrap from Friday through the end of the month.

This is why building the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) around private insurance companies was the wrong way to go. What we need is single payer healthcare like nearly all the other developed nations have.

Should I start holding my breath?

I apply again this Friday.

  1. Hi Geoff,
If you found a policy you like, go to that specific insurance companies site, and you can apply for tomorrow effective if thats what you need.
Not sure why the government one is not working correctly. You should be able to have new coverage kick in the day after COBRA expires.
    good luck

  2. Geoff,
Do you have an insurance broker for your homeowners’ and auto policies? If you have an agent/broker, call them. Not all insurance agents write healthcare policies but maybe yours does. If you do not have a broker, find one who does write health insurance policies and see if they will be able to help you find seamless coverage.
It will not cost you anything additional, their commission is paid by the insurance provider. And they know all the ins and outs. I used a broker to sign up for Obamacare, and she made it very easy for me.

  3. Sheryl hit the nail on the head just go thru an agent they know everything there is to know ! It’s a piece of cake .At work our group rate was even too much, our agent explained the difference and three employees switched to “Obamacare”I’m one and I’m the plan administrator ! Geoff talk to a proffesional you would not try to cut your own hair (I’ve seen it),why try this yourself.
