My Kelly Compliment

megyn kellyIf you read my blog at all you know I’m a bleeding heart liberal. I mention that to put in perspective what happened last night.

While driving home last night I stumbled across Fox News (it’s on SiriusXM) just as Megyn Kelly was introducing Vice President Dick Cheney and daughter. I stayed, expecting to be disgusted by a softball interview. Instead Kelly came out strong.

In your op-ed, you write as follows: ‘Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many.’ But time and time again, history has proven that you got it wrong as well, sir. You said there were no doubts that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. You said we would be greeted as liberators. You said the Iraq insurgency was in its last throes back in 2005. And you said after our intervention, extremists would have to “rethink their strategy of jihad.” Now with almost a trillion dollars spent there with 4,500 American lives lost there, what do you say to those who say you were so wrong about so much at the expense of so many? – h/t to RealClearPolitics for the transcript

I was stunned. This was Fox News. Why wasn’t Cheney getting a gentle massage and grape leaves?

When I got home I tweeted:

.@megynkelly Expected puff interview w/Cheneys. I was wrong. I am very liberal but thought you were tough but fair. Hard won compliment.

What I didn’t expect was Kelly to retweet it to her 695,000 followers! It was her only post interview viewer acknowledgment. My tweet was retweeted dozens on times and favorited even more.

I don’t mean to be a darling of the right, nor should my comment be taken to mean Fox News is actually “Fair and Balanced.” However, what Megyn Kelly did last night was what journalists are supposed to do, hold truth to power.

Too many people are willing to dismiss good work purely because it comes from someone with whom they disagree. I won’t do that.

    1. Television being a visual medium attracts visually pleasing (men and) women. However, I have worked with many exceptionally beautiful, very intelligent women. Why so many believe breast size and brain size are inversely proportional is beyond me?

Megyn Kelly is by no means perfect. She is the person who claimed Santa was white! She and I disagree on lots of issues. She deserves to be fairly judged on her work.

      1. In this instance, she is spot on. Her questions were right on point and she deserves a lot of credit for asking the tough ones as opposed to tossing soft balls to Cheney.

  2. Geoff, I admire your willingness to have an open mind, even with those that you normally disagree with. That’s the sign of real intelligence and tolerance….and our world certainly needs more of that kind of open mindedness. Great job!
