My Little Studioette

I do a little bit of voice work in my office including tracks for the packages I produce. Of course my office isn’t a studio. It’s a small box with lots of echoes.

I’ve been using a wraparound sound absorbing screen which fits on a mic stand but was never happy with the result. Now I have my own studioette. It’s half the clothes closet!

It’s really hard to soundproof a room. I didn’t even try. The goal here is sound deadening.

IMG_5664_1Foam has been mounted on the wall and shelf bottom to absorb sound and keep it from bouncing. The only noise the mic should hear is what’s coming out of my mouth.

It’s a definite improvement over my earlier attempts. Final answer? I suspect this is the type of problem that never gets fully solved.

Here’s a little demo so you can judge for yourself.

  1. I agree with John – a tiny bit of an echo, but sounds pretty good. If I remember correctly, one of the old sound booths I worked in ages ago was also a converted closet. I sometimes think that may be a better use for them than stuffing boxes and other junk in there!

  2. You might try the large egg crate still sound absorbing sheets, instead of the folded cardboard that you appear to have on the wall.

  3. Sounds clear, to my ear. Your previous videos –while the pictures were great–the voice was somewhat garbled. (Like Ch 3 comes through sometimes, here in CT—or maybe it is that I don’t yet have HD TV.
