About This War

These wars are never as simple as the planners see them. Remember, ISIS is armed only because we gave arms to Iraq… which ISIS captured. We have literally armed the enemy!

There’s been a lot of drum beating about Syria and ISIS lately. I have been to this rodeo before. I remember Vietnam and everything that’s followed.

I’ll fast forward for you. We do not win.

These wars are never as simple as the planners see them. Remember, ISIS is armed only because we gave arms to Iraq… which ISIS captured.

We have literally armed the enemy!

So now we’re going to try again?

The worry is attacks in America from ISIS and its followers. These would be concentrated attacks–just a few people inflicting huge damage. But what we’re doing now won’t stop that kind of attack!

It’s a tough situation. Many of the best paid workers in America manufacture military hardware. Our economy is dependent on a constant war footing. The tendency is to use what you’ve got.

Maybe my fear of war is best stated by General/President Eisenhower who saw the problem from both sides.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

I’m not a fan of war.

  1. It’s a scary time in this world Geoff. Thanks for the words. Don’t know what the answers are. The only thing WE can do is HOPE And PRAY

  2. Nor I.
Thanks for the quote. I had written a long comment to submit but got kicked off the site, stating that I needed Java Script and several other things to submit a comment. Will see what happens this time.

  3. Geoff,

Your remarks are absolutely correct. I concur completely. We’ve seen this film before and it’s not pretty. I was reeling with anger at the “side show” by General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff when he popped off about the use of troops on the ground against ISIL. In affect he was saying that if needed our troops would be ready. This a day after President Obama said that our presence would NOT include boots on the ground. I was put off by the fact that it appeared to me that Gen.Dempsey was saying that his troops were battle ready. I initially thought that Gen Dempsey overstepped his authority. In retrospect it seemed to me that his remarks were a kabuki dance to appease the war hawks or to scare ISIL. Either way nothing will work. And so far it’s true!

  4. As a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran, I salute you on your stance/position on wars in general. I wish your thinking could be that of network commentaries in general. Eisenhower warned of the then developing corporate/military complex as he left WH 1960. And, he was right on the money. Regardless of whose in office, money/investors/benefactors SOMEHOW seem to push the buttons of warheads.
