Four Tenths Of One Percent

So many losses. So much head scratching.

Why do so many people vote against their own best interests? Our economy has always been strongest when labor was strong and weakest when corporatists ruled.

I am in denial today. It was a horrendous election for those of my political orientation.

Hey–my side lost. Sucks to be me.

My Cousin Melissa lost last night in a nail biter. The top two were elected to Irvine’s city council..

General Election 2014

Four tenths of one percent. Are you kidding me?

Melissa and her family contorted their lives around this campaign. And now, in an instant, poof.

There was nothing more she could do. It’s a shame. Her ideas on local issues were sound. She would have gotten my vote even if we weren’t related.

Local campaigns get dirty. People lied in campaign literature. Mud was flung. Despicable.

Since it worked it will surely be back next time.

A future blog entry on that.

  1. “Why do so many people vote against their own best interests?” is more of an opinion. As one of your Facebook replies to this link suggests (while trying to defend Obama), the economy is just about “back” and the strongest it has been in years. Some will give Obama the credit, but since the Republican took control of the House (and more Republican governors elected the last time around) you can make a argument that less unionized, more “capitalistic” policies is what has spurred the growth. And because of that, that is why more people have voted Republicans into Congress.

Those of us who lean conservative have had the same denial feelings that you are currently experiencing the last two presidential elections. It’s cyclical. 😉

    1. I like to remind conservatives that back in 1770s, it was the liberals and progressives in Congress that pushed the issue of independence. If the conservatives had had their way we’d still be a British colony.

      1. Based on that logic, then we could remind Democrats that it was the Republicans that fought for and abolished slavery in the 1860s, led by the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln. 🙂

There’s no way someone can compare today’s Republicans (or Democrats) to their respective counterparts 200, 100, or even 50 years ago.

  2. There are always people who are more willing to believe crap than do some real critical thinking or fact checking (it’s not like there aren’t enough sites doing fact checking these days).
Those are much harder and people might discover they were wwrong (or at least hyppocritical) about any number of things.
But as I said on one discussion board today; if you’re wealthy, CEO of a big corporation (especially a defense contractor) or an evangelical; you won big yesterday. If you’re poor elderly or disabled; you lost. But fortunately this can all change again in a couple of years. As my mom used to say, the pendulum swings both ways. It’ll come around to sanity again.
